Creating & Editing Models

Hi

I’m a full stack developer, but I’ve never made a game… Well I did once many years ago in Flash but that doesn’t count. Please regard me as a total and absolute beginner.

So I’ve run through the Space Shooter and Survival Shooter tutorials and found them quite easy and beneficial. Now I feel I’m ready to make my own game, as I have a basic understanding of how things work, but I have met my first issue already…

How do I make my own models? Say I want to create a snow man that have three animation states. How do I create the snow man model and each animation state?

Any tutorials that can help with this is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You use a modeling program, outside of Unity. If you’re on a Mac, I recommend Cheetah3d. Otherwise, set aside a few hours and your sanity to learn Blender.

Oh come on, Blender isn’t THAT hard to learn or weird
Sure, it might not be the best software out there, but it gets the job done and is good as an entry tool (free + a lot learning materials + supported).

Setting aside time to learn how to use something is always there, especially if you’re learning the tool and the task (as in - modelling/animating) at the same time.

I’d hesitate to recommend paid software to anyone learning the task itself, unless there’s no reasonable free option. Spending 99$ (yes, there’s a demo, but without saving you can’t do anything “real” in it, f.e. import the model to unity to see how it’d look there) for a software and ending up with a conclusion of “modelling isn’t for me” (it’s possible)… that stings even if it was from a disposable income part. Might’ve spent it on assets and cross something out of the to-do list instead

I have Blender installed and glancing over the tool and speeding through a few youtube tutorials it really seems like a time consumer… If I want to draw 2D models and create basic animation, would a tool like Gimp or Inkspace suffice and be easy to learn?

For basic animations this might help: 2D Roguelike Setup and Assets - Unity Learn

For the spritesheets itself any software will do. Inkscape, Pencil, GIMP… pick whichever looks ok for you. I’m not into 2D animations, so can’t recommend anything concrete there. You could check graphics subforum too.

I’ll give GIMP a shot to create some sprite sheets for my game  Once I’ve successfully launched my first game, I’ll hopefully have more energy to throw at Blender than I have right now. Thanks a lot to you both for your input.

Yes. Asset creation is a huge time sync on any large project.
