Three months ago I started a tutorial series on Getting Started in Game Development. There has been some interest in it, and I’m considering doing another similar series but at a ‘higher level’. The first series was deliberately very simplistic, so that newcomers could work through it without too many problems. The character design was sketchy, the modelling very basic, the rigging and animation also, etc.
If I do another series it will be a lot more detailed. I don’t intend to get into the details of gameplay at the end, just creating designs and assets that could be used in a game. Some character design, environment design, probably not so much on modelling because that is well covered elsewhere, but maybe some rigging an animation, and certainly texture painting and look dev.
How fast I work on this will depend on how much interest there is. I have a full-time job in another area, and won’t be working too hard on this if there doesn’t seem to be much interest. At the moment I’m gauging interest by the number of subscribers on my YouTube channel, so if you’re interested and you haven’t subscribed, please do. Or better yet sign up to my mailing list but the YouTube channel is easier to monitor.
If you are interested in such a series, but don’t have any skill in digital painting, then I suggest you have a look at my Painting in GIMP series, because I won’t be explaining how to use brushes or layers in a character or environment design tutorial.
I am interested and I have three young people who would more than likely enjoy your tutorials. I really enjoyed the textures videos and shared them with my kids.
I find yours refreshing; no distracting music, they move at just the right pace, and produce quality results. Thanks!
My young digital painter will really enjoy your gimp tutorials.
Sounds like just the audience I’m aiming at. I’d appreciate any feedback, especially constructive criticism. Perhaps a short comment on YouTube if it’s applicable.
I will do that! I watched the videos on your website and loved them. I am passing them on to my daughter who wants to learn texturing and on to my son who is learning Java at the moment but also wants to learn C#. He loves programming, oddly enough.
I just started Adventures in Texturing and will comment when I finish a few and have something to say. The videos on your website were perfect for me. I am a writer/designer, not an artist but I feel pretty confident I could texture a house after watching your videos. They certainly make the software less scary.
It’s great to hear that you found them easy to follow. My main aim it to make the material as accessible as possible to a wide audience, especially to beginners or people who find the technical aspect of 3D somewhat daunting.
