We recently teamed up with the guys and gals at Extra Credits to create a video series on making your first game.
We noticed in the community that A LOT of your wonder how to initially get started in making a game, we cover the technical side of stuff in our tutorials but not really the theory (if that’s the right word).
It was sponsored, we’re not hiding that. The biggest thing we didn’t want was an in your face all things Unity advert, what we did want was to spread knowledge and cover more theoretical topics we lack in our learn section and that would be useful to our community. I think it accomplished this rather well.
I just watched that first video and it was definitely up to Extra Credit’s normal high quality. Kudos for getting them to make a set of videos like this.
For those who are worried about it being a shill for Unity, EC gave basically the same amount of shout-out to Unity as they did to the sponsor of the Punic Wars video series. Yes, they did suggest “go to the Asset Store,” but I’ve seen that suggestion numerous times in Gamasutra and other game design articles by people who weren’t being prompted by Unity to make a video or write an article.
I’m really looking forward to next week’s episode.
If they didn’t suggest go to the asset store you should be concerned. It’s like being hired and told your job is to duplicate the function of the .net library. Uh, why do that if it’s not an academic exercise for uni and you have the money to buy the needed assets or they’re free?
