Sorry for my poor english, but i am a little lost on the licence agreement, can we own Unity3D’s Licence without having to subscribe (from what i understood, subscribe mean to pay every month like a rent, right? I am more interessed in the Pro version, it is almost one year i am learning using it, if i want to port to game console, do that mean i have to pay extra money + the licence / subscribe ? I hear for example if we wish to publish game on Nintendo console we need to buy official licence, it was the case when i use it Palib for Nintendo DS) ? I am aiming for 3D game like Zelda. Thanks in advance, i hope someone re explain to me just to be sur.
Thanks Kiwasi for the quick reply, but why did they decide to use subscribe instead of solding a licence ?? Can i still buy the licence for the previous version of Unity3D ? I just read again the FAQ, so if i decide to buy the new pro of Unity (paying once the 24 month, do that mean i get to keep the version for good ? (no time limit))
My team mate suggest me the same thing about that in the past too, i agree with that, i guess i should try if thing get big.
There are two reasons. One, most game development software with a price tag is now subscription-based. Two, their approach with perpetual licenses was to hold off on major functionality until they were ready for a new major release and this was seen as detrimental to both Unity and their customers. Removing perpetual removed any motivation to do this.
Yes, and you receive the next three patches as well. Patches are small collections of bug fixes that come out in between the minor releases to fix problems for people who cannot wait for the next minor releases. You can see the existing ones at the link below to get an idea of what they contain.
You most likely heard out of date information. You do have to purchase Nintendo development hardware (eg a Switch dev kit is $450) but the actual Unity license is completely free to Nintendo developers. License keys are obtained directly from Nintendo on the developer portal.
