Custom importer/Converter for Dirext X files, .x format

Hey, I have a list of assets that were created in .x format. I’ve tried looking around the forums as well as a google/bing search for a tool… but as you can imagine, ‘.x’ doesn’t search very well.

So, I’m wondering if anyone knows of a decent converter or an importer.

If I have to roll my own I will, but I’d hate to delay my progress if it already exists.

Thanks!

Ultimate Unwrap 3D.

I dont think creating an importer plugin/Editer Script is so easy, cause if it was there would be alot of them out there and for sale, cause its been a forever ongoing topic on how to get ones imported formats into unity. Unless you own one of the few, 1000 to 3000 dollar programs like 3dMax ect. But there are a few low priced and free methods to convert formats. Mentioned in the Unity Manual. One is Blender. It is a free program that imports .x and then the blend format can be read by Unity. I use Fragmotion(imports .x) For all my modeling needs 25Bucks. Then save to .x and import to Ultimate Unwrap(less than 60 bucks-i forgot-lol)then export to .fbx, and it works like a charm.

Blender’s .X support has always had issues, at least it has for me, that’s why I recommended UU3D.

Thanks for the tips! I decided to give blender a go since its free, but when I imported the model there were no textures attached. Worst of all though, it didn’t seem to bring in the UV information, nor the bones. Guess I’ll have to look into UU3D, or try to roll my own importer.

Curious though, what were the issues with blender that you found?

I don’t recall, this was back when I was developing using a DirectX based engine, maybe 3+ years ago. I gave up importing with Blender and switched to UU3D and everything suddenly -worked-. It’s worth the price for the file conversions alone, but again, I haven’t used it in 3+ years.

FWIW there are only a few file formats that Blender imports / exports reliably in my experience: .OBJ, .FBX (export only), and .LWO. The rest are kind of “iffy”.
