Data Loss

During an interaction between visual studio and the unity editor after a save in VS, a crash occurred. The crash resulted in complete loss of asset file data, in my case 5 png files and 2 cs scripts. The editor is set to automatically end play mode on the detection of change in scripts but the crash occurred during this interaction. The crash strangely resulted in loss of data. Rare. But it happened. I was about to go ahead and buy a new computer assuming it may not be a unity issue, but a file explorer issue or corrupt hard drive. Just wondering if you guys know this to be a unity visual studio issue or or do you also think it’s a failing hard drive. Because I used a data recovery tool and the file data for the 5 png and 2 cs script that vanished from project folder could not locate the corrupted fragments of these files. Maybe unity removed them?

Any ideas ?

Use proper version control system, Git or PlasticSCM or anything, really.

Yeah I know I will on the next cpu.

But the crazy deletion of file and depth of its irradiation from system leads me to believe it’s not actually unities fault. But a combination of my hard drive, and unity and vs together.
The files that were deleted had nothing to do with the scripts that were deleted but the files had something to do with the code I was writing and the the change I had saved. The pngs that got deleted were not in use by the directory or script. Only one of them was. They were just in the directory to be used later. For some reason removed. Seemed to be no pattern in removal a file called archer had four animation files removed. A file called Blem had 5 animation png frames lost. So maybe an alphabetical order of deletion/corruption occurred. The script was called characterinventory so we have an a b c in what was deleted. So maybe unity was reimporting everything and visual studio crashed or they overlapped caused a unity freeze vs crash and ctrl alt delete, after those abc files went missing vanished and untraceable with recovery software.
