DDS Textures... Normal maps look awful

I’ve been tearing my hair out about how to get normal maps working in Unity, they work fine in other engines but for some reason in Unity it doesn’t work and looks really messed up. What am I missing?

Anyone figured this out yet?

Does Unity not support standard normal maps?

Can you post some normal map file here (and/or screenshot of whats happening) ?
from which software the normals are coming from?

You should post screenshots of what your model and normal map look like. Just as a guess, maybe you didn’t mark the normal map as such in the importer? Also make sure to uncheck ‘Generate from Grayscale’.

With DDS you don’t get those options unfortunately. Is there another way to do it?

is there any specific reason why you are using .dds ? As far I know Unity converts all source images to the same ( probably dds as well ). There should be no difference in build size between using .png / .jpg / photoshop file or what ever as a source file. I can be wrong with that so dont quote me ^^

That normal map in unity (image 1)

with quick test, saved the normal map as “DXT5_NM XY 8 bpp | using DXT5” (dds)
( Texture Tools Exporter | NVIDIA Developer )

then it looks already bit better (image 2), actually same results if save it as png and then click that fix normal map in unity…
