Dear client, forget Flash, use Unity

The client wants a presentation.
The client wants multimedia.
The client thinks 2D and Flash.

A moment of silence.

You whisper: What about using 3D and Unity?

Before the client has time to answer your question make sure you have some working examples ready.
This can be one of them:

CutScene demo example: Kiosk.

ok, nice advertisement try. (Unityeditors the “cutscene” tool builder, advertising cutscene in a clever semi hidden way)

But ok, i’ll bite…

Sometimes Unity will not suffice for a particular situation, while Flash is.
The otherway arround is also true.
You can think of plugin adaption, audience type, licensing costs, speed, resource utilization etc etc
Conclusion: it depends on the situation what tech to use.

To be fair, it doesn’t actually convince me if I were I client since it isn’t doing anything (overall visually) that flash can’t right now… should be more woah factor to it…

In our example of the Kiosk we wanted the user to have time to read the text. The presentation had to be simple enough to give the user/reader time to understand the words. We used animations and sounds that were simple and continuous. So the user could spend more time in reading the text. But at the same time was guided by a certain feel and pacing in the presentation.

We are very interested in other real world examples in Unity. In which the user is invited to read, instead of to act or being amazed. More concrete examples in this realm could convince clients to use Unity in stead of Flash technology.

Too long loading times is the first thing that comes to my mind (I wouldn’t have waited that long on another website).

Interesting observations from the developer of PaperVision3D about the upcoming revolution of using 3D in Web content:

Question for the nearby future: How to generate Web content beside games in 3D?
A challenge for many Unity developers.
But unfortunately not many good examples to proof our point.
