Death Screen ( similar to wolfenstein 3d )

Hi!
I was wondering if there is a way to make a death screen similar to the one in wolfenstein 3d (

) where the screen is gradually becoming red, pixel by pixel. I could duplicate some small sprite until it covers a screen entirely. But possibly there is a better solution.

A dissolve shader played in reverse on a red rectangle across the screen should do it.
