Deformation when moved into unity

I am reworking an older project for a professor and i have an older model I need to use. In maya and in the preview window of inspector view the character looks correct, but when i move it into the scene view its horribly disfigured. After some work I found that deleting the history solved the issue, however it created a new issue, the skin binding was removed. Is there anyway I could fix the deformations and keep the binding?

It seems like removing any history destroys the binding, is there a way to prevent this? Or does anyone know of a good binding tutorial.

Any one know anything about this at all, i have a male character that doesn’t have the large deformations but parts are out away from the body. I cant move the parts at all inside unity.

But the screenshot reveals an error in the model with a whole finger not assigned to a bone as it seems, that will lead to some pretty ugly errors when actually animating. The whole skin must be weighted
