I just updated to the newest version of the free unity, 4.1.3 and now all of my assets and the extra folder of saved projects I saved in the unity folder on my hard drive is gone? Does the Unity update overwrite the old files or delete the whole folder and install brand a new folder?
If I can’t find all my extra content that I have spent hours downloading from the forum, I feel like giving up?!
Any idea on where I can find my old projects and assets without having to re-download them?!
I’m lucky enough to have some old rar files from the trash can. I can’t find any of my .obj files that I have been re-texturing that were saved in my unity folder on my hard drive.
Any one else have this problem?
I’m sorry to hear of your troubles. Just to clarify where exactly did you place your project files? Did you place them inside the unity installation folder?
The normal use of software is to have an installation folder and a data folder, in windows the installation folder would typically be c:\program files\ or something like that. If you upgrade in the same folder what happens is that the old Unity uninstalls and then the new version installs. I actually don’t know if the uninstall actually deletes extra files in the installation folder or not. But the installation folders are for Unity to put binary files in, you certainly shouldn’t put project files there.
You should store projects either in your documents folders or any data folders that you set up on your machine, but certainly not in the installation folder or in the OS folders.
What version of Unity did you upgrade from?
I hope all of this is just a misunderstanding, it would be truly tragic if you’ve lost all of your hard work.
I’m on a Mac and I had put my project files in the unity folder to help organize it. I know remember that I did click the “okay to replace 3.5 GB to be removed and re installed” box that popped up. I’d really read it and just assumed it was just updating. This was totally my fault.
I’m still new to Unity but have a million ideas and love the possibility of creating them. This will just be a learning curve I will have to move on from. Hope it helps someone else from making the same mistake.
