Delta 9 (WIP)

The year is 2063, after natural disaster after natural disaster the world is a completely different place with only one government controlling the whole world. Its called The United Government of Earth, and its pretty much a totalitarian rule. The government likes the people to think that they’re completely controlled, but the reality is that underground gangs and gang violence is out of control.
The only sign of hope in this whole screwed up civilization is a deep space station called Delta 9. It is used for research, outer space exploration or just plain holiday makers.
Construction finished in 2054, and since then the population has grown to about 80,000. It is self sustaining in every way, and new sections are always being added.
Last year all contact was cut off between there and Earth. It had people baffled. Any rescue crews sent out would disappear as well, their radio contact stopping as soon as they neared the space station.
No one is sure what to do, no one wants to go near it now because of the mystery that surrounds anyone who goes missing near it.

The character you play is called Gene Bova.

Gene is part of the underground gang scene but isn’t really associated with any one gang. He did mostly contract work which involved him doing serious crimes such as murder, armed robberies and ‘roughing up’ people who owed money or whatever.
His last task was to rob a government office and find plans for the fate of an old apartment block that’s in gang territory. This went wrong however and he was caught red handed and he killed a government guard. The police didn’t catch him but they know he did it and now he’s a wanted man.
He’s in hiding now in an apartment that a friend of his owns, and he’s pretty much trapped there because you need a Civilian Security Pass to travel around the cities main streets (he needs to go through back allays, people apartments etc).

The starting story goes like this:
Gene is in the apartment and he gets a call from his friend who owns it to come and meet him in a back allay, where he says he has an acquaintance who will help him escape to the country side.
Gene trusting him automatically arrives to the allay to see his friend at gun point by the gang he was previously doing work for. They think that he screwed them over and actually sold the plans to another gang for a higher price, because now another gang owns it.
He pleads with them and says its not true. They don’t believe him and threaten to kill him and his friend. He offers to do anything in exchange, to prove him self.
They say that they have an important acquaintance with information they need who went on holiday to Delta 9, but never returned and broke contact.
They make it his mission to go to Delta 9, and retrieve him.
Gene agrees.
They say find out what happened to him or they will kill his friend.
They shove him in a space craft, and the main game begins (the Earth bit at the start will act as a tutorial as well).

Here are some screen shots of the Earth level I’ve started to build:

The apartment you start out in.

Its in shots like these where you can see that some detail still needs to be added. Its a food replicator machine, kinda like out of Star Trek, and Space Quest who copied it out of Star Trek.
I keep meaning to finish it off, but it just keeps getting pushed back further and further.

That red force field is suppose to be a thing that registers if you’re carrying a Civilian Security Pass or not.

The block of apartments courtyard. Kinda resembles a prison.

An example of how nice and friendly the government is.
Its abandoned apartments like this that allows Gene to get around without a pass.

This is in its very early stages, I’ve been working on it in my spare time for less than 2 weeks.
Feedback would be very appreciated.

Seems like your going very far with this project, and a great storyline to it. Just one thing i’d mention is that judging from these screenshots, it doesnt seem to feel like anything past the year 2020+ as the game is set in 2063, you need to scale things up with more “tech” like stuff. I’d imagine half our city would look slick and white in that year :stuck_out_tongue: If your going to be making a game in the future (and not the near future, were about 50 years away) then you really need to dish out some serious ideas to show how much we have changed in the past 5 decades…

Look at the example of how tech was in 1998, we had windows 98 and 8 bit stuff, 12 years after that we have super computers, super smart phones, and andriods and so much stuff (even stuff that isnt released to the public but you can tell from the stuff they make in japan etc).

Just a thought, thats all :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah good point. I’ve actually got some ideas in mind to keep with the fact that its so many years in the future.
But think about it, in this game so many natural disasters have happened and mankind has been through so much, struggling just to survive.
I doubt too much time would have gone into developing technology considering.
Having said that, they did manage to build a deep space station that is capable of holding over 80,000 people so I guess I need to find a good balance.
The idea though is that Delta 9 was suppose to an escape from what is left of Earth, and will be completely opposite to the gray, sterile and heavily controlled look of Earth.

Got ya some more Delta 9 goodlyness.
Here is some more screenshots of the Earth level I’m currently working on.

The inside of that abandoned Apartment

This lift is out of order. Looks like you’ll be taking the stairs.

Corridor that connects the apartments on that level.

Oppression against the government is present, but not seen regularly.

Basement of the apartment block which holds generators.

And a back allay.
More coming soon!

looks really good! I can’t wait to see more! all the modeling and texturing is done by you I assume? Whats the gameplay going to be like, is it a third person or fps?
Keep up the good work!

Thanks :slight_smile:
All the modeling is done by me, so is some of the textures (on things like the Food Replicator) and the rest I got from CG Textures.com. Which is an awesome free texture site.
The gameplay is going to be FPS with a hint of puzzles to mix things up.

Looks cool so far. What program do you use to model?

Cheers :slight_smile:
I use 3ds Max.

This morning I received my brand new Wacom Bamboo Pen graphics tablet and wanted to draw something with it.
So I came up with a rough concept for the United Government of Earth Peacekeeper (basically the governments henchmen).

This is the first of a planned series of development blogs about my game.
In this video you get to hear my sexy voice and I give you a tour around the Earth level.

Also please check out a playable version of what you see on the video here.

Please note that in the place where you need to get to the abandoned apartment where there is no ladder leading to it, you need to jump instead (the jump is set on high) as I don’t have a working ladder yet.

Any chance someone could give me some feedback?

Well if you had actually watched the video you would realise that its the intro/tutorial level in which I want to establish a hatred for the government and also teach the player the basic controls at the same time, it wasn’t suppose to be very long because really who draws out a tutorial? Everyone just wants to get into the main game, I thought doing it this way would at least make it slightly interesting.
Also never played Dues Ex (sadly) but the having two options to get there doesn’t sound half bad, I also said in the video that I want it to be slightly non-linear.
I also stated that I know next to nothing about scripting. How would I go about making a clock or even flashing surfaces?

Could you also please send me in the right direction of what “reduce Near Camera” is, and how to not render things in close proximity of the player?
Geez the more I write this, the more I realise I’m noob :stuck_out_tongue:
But yeah any help on these matters would be great, cheers.

Wow man, thanks for all that. I’ll keep you posted on how integrating that stuff works.

Aw damn, I just noticed that the guy who posted all that helpful stuff deleted his comments.
I guess that teaches me for putting it off too long, but I don’t understand why he would go to all the trouble of writing out the comment only to delete it :frowning:

  • Menu Create Other 3DText
  • Drag clock.js onto 3DText

Inspecter

  • Name “New Text” will be used below

In Clock.js

  • GameObject 3DText : New Text
var currentsSeconds = 0;
var currentsMinutes = 0;
var currentsHours = 0;
var Rot = 0.0;

 var timeText : String;

 var GameObject3DText : String;

function Start () {

}

function Update () {

  var a=GameObject.Find(GameObject3DText);
   a.GetComponent(TextMesh).text="a";

currentsSeconds = parseInt(System.DateTime.Now.ToString("ss"));
currentsMinutes = parseInt(System.DateTime.Now.ToString("mm"));
currentsHours = parseInt(System.DateTime.Now.ToString("hh"));
DayNightSystem = currentsHours*3600 + currentsMinutes*60 + currentsSeconds;
//Rot = DayNightSystem/240;
//transform.eulerAngles.z = Rot;
//print(DayNightSystem);

timeText =  "Localtime: \n" + currentsHours.ToString () + ":";
timeText = timeText + currentsMinutes.ToString () + ":";
timeText = timeText + currentsSeconds.ToString () + ":";

	a.GetComponent(TextMesh).text=timeText;
}

Use this below to keep 3DText from showing through other objects

I have a fairly good computer, i7 GTX 295, 24GB RAM etc but your game lags a whole lot for me.

You jump really high, and it lags for me too. (4 gig ram)

Thanks Runner! :smile:
And yes I know that the lag is awful, its one of my main priorities to fix right now. Dunno how I’ll do it, but hopefully I’ll figure something out.

The jump is on that high so you can get to the abandoned apartment (I don’t have a working ladder yet).

How is the level constructed? Is it all put together within Max and then imported or is some of it made within Unity from individual meshes? If it’s made totally in the modeller and then imported, are all similar object within single layers etc? I’m just trying to get to the bottom of the lag problem you have.

btw… i recently bought a Wacom Bamboo and am loving it for texturing and sculpting… not sure how i managed without it.

It’s looking really good, keep us posted on updates.

Regards,
Matt.
