Demand for animal rpg?

I’m in the beginning stages of creating a huge animal rpg. The first of the planned series of games will be placed in an African environment with the choice of six different animals:
Carnivores

  • African lion
  • Leopard

Omnivores

  • Hyena
  • Warthog

Herbivores

  • Zebra
  • Elephant

You will be able to live as one of these animals throughout their lives; roam around, hunt, scavage, mate, discover and much more! Plus there will be a story line that will be revealed when the game is released!
My question to you is how high is the demand for such a game.

It would depend on your target audience + style of art/game.

“Lion king” style would be probably be the most popular. The other extreme is a “Survival of fittest” game with your lion having combos to rip/chew up a poor defenceless antelope. Not sure how the combos would work for mating, but I’ve got some ideas! :stuck_out_tongue:

Small kids are into animals. Cartoony animals, or semi-photoreal. Older kids and adults, not so much. Unless they’re Furries.

My idea of the game would be completely realistic where hunting would be graphic and every moment is intense! As a herbivore under attack, you would have an intense chasing scene trying to outrun and out-think the predator with combos! Since this is what I am going for, what do you guys think?

This sounds very awesome. I would totally play something like this!

You would have to think about goals and progression. Find a watering hole, food, migrate from A->B, etc. It would give you your storyline and variety.

This sounds interesting. Basically a Hunter-Prey sim.

If this is indeed what you’re planning to do, I hope you have a pretty solid understanding of atleast basic AI.

Well if it shows progress, I’d like to join and help out.

Check out PS3’Hakuna Matata. Graphics that literally made us go "Ohh Ahhh"but the lack of music made me fall asleep while sitting around waiting for my ‘prey’. Now you try playing Metal while stalking a Gazelle and see how long your audience forgives you… Catch 22

I think the demand would be high in my opinion. I am not just saying that because I would absolutely love an animal RPG with good graphics and has realistic features to it but a lot of young people, mostly in their teens have been looking for a game that can allow them to do what actual animals do (play, mate, hunt, roam around/travel, defend family, etc). Yes there are other but very few animal RPG games such as Wolfquest that allow you to experience the life of an certain animal (wolf in this case), but it is just not enough, you can’t actually see the pups grow up, or you can’t drink from a pond, play around with your mate/family, show affection, and all that extra stuff that does actually matter. Plus, there is only one type of food in that game which is elk. It gets a little boring after a while. I hope you get the support you need, you have mine. In fact I made an account just to let you know I fully support your game idea and I think many others will as well. I am an animal lover so…you get the idea.

I guess it depends on ‘how realistic’ you are talking.

Apparently lions arent very successful hunters so I am not sure if most players would like to stare at their screen for a few hours, move 2m, prey sees you runs away → game over.

One game that kind of uses this is Silent Hunter. You can essentially wait for your prey (ships) and then you pounce in the right moment. I dont think Silent Hunter sold all that well though eventhough it has amazing graphics.

So check out Silent Hunter for the same principle. (except you dont need to eat… but you need fuel)

Realism would be a hearty challenge, but it looks promising nonetheless

Thank you all for the great feedback! I have taken all of your thoughts to heart and I am implementing them into the game. In the middle of developing, however, I started rethinking my decision of an African landscape to an American(National Parks) landscape. Would the demand be as high?

no.

Guys I think we’ve strayed miles away from what the term RPG actually means.

RPG stands for Role Playing Game, and derives from the tabletop RPGs like D&D, Shadowrun, Vampire etc.

In order to play a role, as the term stands, the player’s character needs to have social skills, or at least, be intelligent enough to talk. Otherwise there’s no “role” to be played.

The terminology of RPG when it comes to computer games has degraded over the decades with games like Diablo minimizing the role playing aspect while maintaining the RPG core combat mechanics (Gaining experience, leveling up). Today an RPG is mostly defined by its system than the actual role playing happening inside it, but still, rudimentary NPC interractions still exist (you still “talk” to NPCs to buy items, gain quests, etc).

In your case, I can totally see an RPG game borrowing the concept of Lion King, and it would make a very interesting game. However, you mentioned realism, and due to lack of explanation, I assumed you were referring to realism in all aspects and not just gameplay.

So my question is, when you are playing as an animal with no social skills, where is the RP part of the RPG? You can’t talk to anyone, nobody can give you quests, and there can be no inventory system. The storyline can only be delivered through a 3rd party narrative exposition, so your typical RPG quests are void. Wouldn’t it make more sense to create a platform game instead?

And this isn’t just about the scenario. In nature you see instant kills. If a lion catches up to a zebra, it doesn’t deal 100 damage to it, it snaps the zebra’s neck. If an elephant tramples a hyena, the hyena is done for, and no amount of hit points can save it. You can’t have a hit point system in a realistic environment. Again, the approach of a platform game for this amount of realism is preferable to that of an RPG game.

I doubt you can be as realistic as you want with the RPG approach. It needs to be surreal to be an RPG.

Interesting idea, but remember at the end of the day it’s all going to come down to how well its executed and how good gameplay is.
If that’s done well and it looks good no reason why people wouldn’t give it a go due to its originality.

reminds me of deer avenger, and the i got free pizza call lol… sorry just had a falsh back now i need to go play it …
