Dental Defenders beta

We’ve got a pretty good beta of our latest Unity game: Dental Defenders, which we’re developing for Delta Dental of New Jersey. Target audience is kids 8-12 years old (and anyone else who just never gets tired of brushing their teeth). We’d welcome feedback of any kind, but particularly regarding difficulty level in the Snack Attack missions–I’m still tinkering with them, deliberating about which food should make cavities unavoidable or not.

Many thanks to Jon and Matt at Graveck Interactive for doing all the Unity work on this game.

Give it a spin!

Maybe I’m dense but …

  1. I could not figure out how to brush/floss. I could pull them from my pack but could not figure out how to use them.

  2. The spacebar did not jump. When I was holding the brush/floss, pressing the spacebar put them away. If they where already away, pressing the spacebar did nothing.

NOTE: I tried the Mac version under Safari.

HTH,
David

The spacebar only jumps when the mouth is open… it jumps you onto the teeth and inside the mouth, then back again.

For me… I couldn’t get the B or F keys to do anything!

The first level is just identifying “Primary” teeth. After that level you do some brushing… and then flossing.

I really like the mouth and teeth models, very well done. In fact the whole thing is pretty polished except for some bugginess trying to get into the right position to brush/floss. Sometimes the character would just walk back and forth trying to get into the right position (and failing) when I clicked on a tooth to be brushed/flossed.

Overall really well done. The only thing that might be missing is a girl character… putting the dude in a pink outfit doesn’t count

You guys should be really proud of that, well done!

The b and f worked well for me in the webplayer. A little bit of excess walking back and forth, but no show stopper. Sometimes I wanted the text on screen to dissappear a little quicker, but again, no big deal.

Downloading for the kids. Now excuse me I need to scrub my gnashers.

Thanks for the comments. I added that control key at the bottom of the screen right at the last minute, and didn’t pause to think it might be confusing in early missions when all of the tools are not yet active. I’ll have to give that some thought…

Say, some kid testers report “getting kicked out of the game” repeatedly. (Typically helpful user bug report). Does anybody have any idea what they could be talking about?

thanks
Dave

Maybe its browser restrictions within schools so they dont actually get to start the game?

I’d love to know how you did the two-part brushing animation, the way the brush anchors onto the tooth, then you have to scrub with the mouse twice to do the tooth-is that some fancy IK scripting?

Great game.

I like how the teeth is looking.

Really, really great little game. I also like the wiggly brushing to clean the teeth animation and the multi-pass cleaning after eating the gummy bear was cool. It takes a long time to clean the whole mouth though and I could only stomach doing that for the apple and the gummy bear, I wasn’t about to keep going to clear all the snack items.

I had no problem brushing or flossing with the web player, but did easily forget the key to press to open the mouth (shift) for a while. It also took me until the snack attack to realize I could go to the inside of the mouth to look and clean too and get the back side of the back teeth.

It did seem like you had no chance of getting away with eating a gummy bear. I liked the multi-pass cleaning there, but I think you should be able to clean it if you spent enough time on it rather than failing because you ran out of time. If you give up early and say your done that’s one thing, but if I stay at it, I want to get it clean w/o running out of time.

Overall though, very well done and executed, and great looking… congratz.

Oh and i like the music, it has some 8bit like touch. Only at the end of the loop i always feel that the melody should take a different direction and the theme could evolve further.

We launched Dental Defenders last week:

Thanks again to Jon and Matt at Graveck for all the GUI and Unity work, and to Pete for the nifty 3D dentist.
