Deprecation Announcement: Cloud Diagnostics Advanced (CDA)

Cloud Diagnostics Advanced (CDA) is deprecated. As part of deprecation, new customers will not be able to purchase or onboard to CDA, either online through the Unity store or with the Unity sales team.

We’re investing in Unity Gaming Services (UGS), especially LiveOps, to make improvements that minimize customer confusion and product complexity. Deprecating CDA helps achieve these goals while paving a path for future improvements to Unity’s holistic monitoring and crash diagnostics tooling. We truly believe this decision will benefit you (our customers) in the long term.

Unity will continue to offer Cloud Diagnostics, a completely separate product from CDA, that is still included with all Unity Editions.

All current CDA customers, whether on a paid plan or the free developer plan, will be supported through the end of their annual subscription. Existing subscriptions will not auto-renew. If your organization is using CDA and requires its identical functionality, you will still be able to purchase and use Backtrace’s crash & error reporting tool to transition off of CDA. The core technology is identical.

Cloud Diagnostics Advanced will fully sunset in Q3 2025, at which point no customers will be able to access it via the Unity Cloud dashboard.

What Should I Do Next?

  • “I want to buy CDA.” - There are many available crash and error reporting tools available in the market today.
    • For existing Unity engine users, Cloud Diagnostics is an excellent option that supports up to roughly 300,000 errors per month. It is also included with all Unity Editions.
    • For non-Unity engine customers and/or those anticipating > 300,000 errors per month, Backtrace is the recommended choice. Reach out to our team today to learn more about your options.
  • “I am using CDA today.” - You will be able to access the CDA dashboard through the duration of your current annual subscription. Before the conclusion of your subscription, you will need to transition to using Backtrace directly through their dashboard or move to a different solution.
    • For those wanting to continue accessing the same functionality through Backtrace, no live games will be impacted, as the core technology powering CDA (Backtrace’s SDKs) is not impacted by the deprecation or sunset of CDA.
    • Unity and Backtrace’s parent company Saucelabs are working closely on a customer migration plan to make the process as seamless as possible for your organization. Additional information and next steps will be provided in the coming weeks via your dedicated Client Partner or email if you do not work with a Client Partner.

What is the advice for those of us that develop for Xbox One and want crash reporting on that platform? Cloud Diagnostics Advanced supported this platform but Cloud Diagnostics does not, which in our case was why we switched over in the first place.

As a small indie developer, Backtrace’s pricing will probably not be an option if we have to pay for it. We could use their free tier but from what I can gather their free tier limits apply per account, rather than per Unity project as was the case when used through Cloud Diagnostics Advanced.

Hi @Battenberg-Software team! CDA and Backtrace have the same error limits and pricing across the main plans, including the free tier. Error and usage limits are at the Unity Organization level and Backtrace Instance, both of which can have multiple Unity projects within them. As such, you can move to Backtrace with the same pricing, error limits, and support for XBox as CDA supported.

Ah yes, my mistake, I can see now that it’s possible to have multiple projects within a Backtrace account like it was possible to have multiple projects within the Unity Organization. So yes, we can continue to use Backtrace for free with the same limits as before.

Thanks for letting us know!
