I just spent a while trying to get the shadows to work in my scene, it turned out I needed to change the directional light from “force vertex” to anything else, except as soon as I change it my far camera stops rendering (for the most part) and in it’s place I’m seeing the “depth only” mess from the near camera. Every so often it snaps back for a split second and then continues to render mess again. If I switch it back to “force vertex”, or change it to “no shadows” every thing’s fine.
I have the typical near / far camera setup. The near camera renders everything (FOV-0.3-150) and the far camera only renders the terrain and skybox (FOV-150-2000). As I don’t understand what you mean by “overlaid on it” I’m going to assume I don’t have anything doing that
There’s a very good chance that my shadows are not set up properly. They may be working but they’re all jittery as if they’re vibrating when I move and some of them definetly look less than perfect. I’ve attached some pictures in case they help.

(I can’t really take a screen cap of the vibrating thing  )
