Designing your own animations for Mecanim

I’ve been playing around with the mocap animations from the asset store on some makehuman models I’ve been working with. The thing is, for what I am doing, I don’t want things so realistic. More cartoony. So I am making my own models for my project. The other thing is that even though I can put on mocap animations that make a makehuman model walk forward on its own, I can’t seem to find any good tutorials to make my own animations. I know how to make animations in Blender and use character controllers to move my players and characters, but how do I make my own animations that move on their own like the mocap asset store animations? I take it that these animations use the mecanim system, but I can’t figure out how to make my own. The ones that I’ve tried all end up just walking or running in place rather than moving around.

I want to try and use that kind of animations to get smoother player movement, less foot sliding and better control. Can anyone tell me or point me to a good place to learn how to make such animations?
