Detail Meshes on Terrain

I just started experimenting with terrains and don’t understand how to “paint” detail meshes on the terrain. I created a rock mesh and assigned it to a detail mesh. But I can’t paint it on the terrain. If I go over, or near, a place I already painted, it erases what’s there. If I click once in a spot it adds the meshes, but if I click again without moving the mouse, it removes them. I have a feeling this may have something to do with the opacity or target strength settings, but I can’t find anything in the ref manual about what they do. I’m not holding the shift key when painting.

My question is, how can I add detail meshes without erasing the meshes that are already there? I’d like to be able to go over spots that need more rocks, but if I click again in that area or drag across it, everything disappears. How can I fill in additional meshes?

you don’t do anything wrong.

you don’t paint detail meshes actually.
you paint a distribution map that the engine then uses to randomly place meshes according the distribution density within that given area.

there is no possibility to paint single objects, be it detail or trees, if you want to do that you must use real meshes and place them as game object

I’m not trying to paint individual objects. I’m just trying to fill in empty spots or add more rocks. For example, I drag the brush across an area, and then I see that I missed a spot or want more rocks in a particular spot. If I go back over that spot, everything I put there before disappears. It’s like painting detail meshes is a one-time thing. If I don’t get it right with the first brush stroke, I have to delete everything and start over again. Seems like I should be able to add meshes without starting over.
