[devlog] IT Simulator!

About IT Simulator

Keep the office running smoothly in the face of increasing user stupidity, unlikely disasters, and demanding bosses. Fix computers, put out fires, buy new hardware, unjam printers, and remove the adware that keeps plaguing Janet’s computer (spoiler alert: it’s because she keeps installing browser toolbars)

Manage boring corporate offices, a robot laboratory, mission control of a space agency, trendy startups, and more.

A bit about me

My name is Rebecca (or nonplayercat) and I’ve been in the professional games industry for about 6 years now. I quit my job as a game artist a couple months ago and started working on IT Simulator full time. I’m really hoping to turn my love of game development into something awesome!

Plan

There’s still a long way to go on the development side of things. During that time, I’m also trying to build up community interest in the game, so that when I’m near an alpha stage I can launch a successful Kickstarter. If you’d like to help me toward that goal, please follow the development process on any/all of these things:

  • My personal Twitter account where I post the most stuff: x.com
  • The IT Simulator Twitter account: x.com
  • The official website where you can join the newsletter: https://itsimulator.com/

Devlog

I’ll keep posting my devlog updates in this thread until you get sick of me. I’d really love to hear your ideas and feedback as I go along. There’s still a lot to shape in the game, and your input can make a big difference. I’m also just starting to learn this whole “marketing” thing, so any advice is appreciated!

Devlog 1: Where we started

I was getting bummed out by a game I’d been working on in my off-hours for a long time, so perplamps suggested a little game jam to get my mind in a better place. We started out with an idea about you being an office worker trying to steal office supplies undetected- but we quickly realized that wasn’t very fun.

A screen recording from late January:

And a couple days later:

By that time we realized this lack of fun…ness in the original idea, we had already gotten a little office together, so we thought about what other office-based games we could make. Somewhere between “Algorithmic Stock Trading Tycoon” and “Office Farting Party”, we came up with the idea that you’re the office’s IT person and you need to fix everyone’s broken computers, reset passwords, and all the boring stuff we imagine IT people do (neither of us have ever been IT people).

We then started thinking of more crazy things the IT person could deal with, like fires and robots. With enough crazy stuff going on and a dash of management sim gameplay, we felt pretty good about the game concept as a whole.

I guess we felt good enough about it for me to decide to quit my day job and work on it full time!

We slacked a bit on devlogs for the first couple months, but I have been posting a lot of WIP stuff to Twitter and promise to make devlogs religiously from now on.

(Also, here’s a more recent screen capture to show the progress we made since those gifs above:)

Very interesting.

lol looks like a laugh. Usually I don’t follow indies much but this has stuff I can identify with

Devlog 2: Updating the promo images

Our promotional images were severely lacking, so we spent a couple days to make them look a bit more professional.

Here’s what we originally had (quickly) made:

For the update, we had an idea to make the text 3D in physical game space. Here’s a little gif of the progress:

And here’s what we ended up with:

Let me know what you think!
