Did I create a New Game Genre? I think I did, but what do you think?

(I UNDERSTAND, NOT A NEW GENRE)
We feel we have made a new genre in mobile gaming. There are Endless Runners, that you know of, Temple Run, Subway Surfers, etc. We have taken that idea and expanded it into this, what we are titling the genre as BOUNDLESS RUNNER. It is a runner game, but you are not limited to position, you can roam anywhere in the world.

I just uploaded the first “real” release of the game for mobile and it’s being released for the first time on Desura.com, check their homepage.

I started production on this game almost 2 years ago, I stopped for long periods of time to create other games, and learn. Although my 15+ years of programming experience on databases and business systems helped, I still had to learn how to make games. This was a great learning experience for me and I am happy that after almost 2 years, I am done with this game and am COMPLETELY HAPPY WITH IT. On PC it has been great, this is the first time on Mobile it is up to par performance wise, although performance is no where near as good as on PC, where the game is much more enjoyable.

This game was fully made by only 2 people, me the programmer, and a single artist.

Here is the first Game Trailer ever released for public consumption, uploaded in the last day:

A mix of genres.

You may lose gamers with such vast openess as A->B becomes A->XYZDFEYZX->B

I don’t know if it’s a new genre per se, as that generally applies to very broad gameplay descriptions, but it could be a new gameplay idea. As you said endless runners have been done before but the infinite world in all directions I haven’t heard of being done before.

Its a 3d skiing game, I don’t see a new genre. Except perhaps if endless skiing is a genre - games like tony hawk’s snowboarding etc spring to mind, albeit with limited tracks. Besides, I don’t think you can create a new genre - you can create an original game and then it can become a genre once everyone else copies it.

This is a very good point, I overstepped my bounds. The concise wording of, people then copying it, making more games, makes more sense to a genre, so based on responses, you guys are right, it’s just a mixed game of many genres. Very well said imaginaryhuman!

Looks to me as if it’s a ski script attached a sledder gameObject attached to the free infinite terrain unity package. Seriously, exaggeration like that sets off the used car saleman alarms.

But I found the abominable snowman very interesting till he started running.

yeah, because 1 year of working denotes I downloaded a script from the asset store that is like every other game. get real, this game is fully 100% custom made. I’m not downplaying unity asset store scripts, some packages are amazing, but this game is nothing less than custom. I do however, use NJG Minimap (A GREAT PRODUCT!) and NGUI.

You are not seeing the forest because you are stuck behind a tree when seeing what this game is all about. And taking a quick look at your recent posts, it would appear you are certainly one of the biggest trolls on this forum, so I’m going to digress from giving you a heated response, apart from, learn what the meaning of the acronym ASSUME is.

This is not a game about infinite terrain, it is entirely based off of other aspects, and this infinite terrain system is certainly not something you can download on the asset store, but I did make it public for you, as I posted in the unity forums teaching section on Random Infinite Terrain, you are free to use my work as you wish.

Unfortunately, the animator isn’t with us anymore. It is not complete. My next projects, maybe this will not be the case.

Looks pretty cool and original ,but I do not think it’s a new genre.

To be honest with you guys, I just want to be done with this game. It is released, I want nothing more to do with this game. It is a game I built, but in the end, it was built to be a remembrance of my own dear brother who passed away in a high speed automobile accident recently, just before Paul Walker died, but he died just like Paul Walker, an innocent passenger:

My brother was a part of this game, and he will be no more. The posts and Plincko game after you die was intentionally put there by me for remembrance of my brother who lived the last few moments of his life impacting on posts that should not have been there for him. This game means nothing more to me but a memory and something I will never revisit. The game is over, I hope you enjoy it and I hope you find the over 100 references to our humble human existence that exist in this game, even though it may seem childish at first, this game has deep adult meanings, that only adults will understand, but safe enough for any aged player to play, the overtones in this game are nothing but intentional to make you think of life and what it is to go downhill from here. This is my last post about this game. It is available on all platforms, blackberry, Google play, PC, Linux etc, but I am done. I’m going to go finish another project now.

Definitely not a new genre.

I don’t want to comment further in case your later comments are true.

When I first started browsing the Unity forums a few months ago I think I remember an earlier version of this being one of the first Unity games I sampled. It’s come pretty far since then. Whether it’s a new genre or not I think it’s a solid and most importantly fun game.
Keep up the good work, man.

I remember the first thread  I had a lot of fun playing the first instalment. When I first started using unity, I remember looking at it and going “Wow, someday I want to be able to do that”. I’d love to play the second vision but I also really don’t want to pay $6 for it, nor to sign up for Desura. Thanks.

I’m giving away game keys to download the game free on Desura. PM me if you want a key.

Not sure why someone would lie about something like that, but, I have nothing to hide. here ya go: https://www.facebook.com/aaricky

It looks like an amazing game!

Here are the sources to what I did in Downhill OMG, giving away for free since I’m moving on to other projects.

Dont get it so twisted, life still exists, and this nothing more than what I can offer:

Just remember your loved ones while they are here, they will not be here forever. This, I leave you with.
