Differences between Unity Indie and Pro / Licensing?

Hi, I was wondering what the differences were between Indie and Pro. Also I was wondering what form of licensing / copy protection is used?

Differences are listed here.

Unity editor currently uses PACE software copy protection.

Thank you for the reply, I didn’t see that before. Are you able to sell the games you make with Indie? If you make a game with Indie are there any watermarks or do you need to state that you used Unity?

You can sell games with Indie. There is no limit with what you can do with a game created with Indie (commercial, sharware, freeware, ect…). There is only a watermark on webplayers. Nothing else.

I don’t like the iLok but the rest sounds good, thank you.

We’re not using the iLok (that would mean a hardware dongle!), it’s pure software protection (link).

Really? Could someone please tell me how this process works? Is it connected to the computer ID? Can it be installed on a desktop and a laptop?

I’m pretty sure that regardless of how the copy protection works, one license equals one simultaneous install.

That’s not actually true… One license can be installed and activated on two machines (to be used by the same person). So if you’ve got a laptop and a desktop, just go ahead.

Alrighty - good to hear! I’m used to the policies of some other companies…grumble

So could someone who has purchased it please walk me through these licensing steps, and if anyone knows, what the process is for having the license transfered to a new computer if you end up replacing yours.

The steps are like this:

  1. select “enter serial number” from Unity menu, select “internet activation”
  2. this goes to a website with some magic data that identifies your computer.
  3. enter serial number on the text field on the website.
  4. unity activated! (it checks back with the activation server)

If your number of activations (2) is not exceeded yet, activating Unity on another machine is the same process. If the number is exceeded already because you upgraded machines often, drop a mail to sales@unity3d.com and we’ll sort you out.
