You are already contributing. By paying taxes you keep the state going on with all its education and road building and whatever. By purchasing products from the store you keep those jobs alive. And so on. Do what you do best, and let the world handle itself, it does a pretty good job.
You don’t have to be a doctor and save kids’ life every week to justify your existence in this world.
All my respects to people who make this world such a better place. More so those who ask little or nothing in return.
Those are great people. But this is not a competition to see who’s greater. This is life, the only one you’ve got.
…So you’re thinking making games does NOT make you one of those great people, DEAL WITH IT. But that doesn’t make you a bad person. And even then, even a little game can do its part, to make hundreds or thousands of people’s life a little better, even if it’s just 1% better, that’ your contribution.
So many people do so much harm, step on each other to get to the top. You’re doing NONE of that. You’re making your way to happiness without harming anyone. You should feel happy, not bad.
People need to be united and joined and connected. That’s a natural state of being that is literally good health. Isolation and separation lead to most forms of sickness and mental illness. What your heart longs for is union and connection. Sometimes what your head/intellect longs for is control and getting what you want. Or at least, that’s what your ego does, and everyone has an ego.
I feel the pull too that sometimes when I am working along on something and getting into technical details and programming etc… it feels quite lonely and isolating. It’s just me, and nobody else. It doesn’t feel good, it feels cut off, and especially if you pile on a sense of competing with everyone or trying to please people with your game, it just piles more sense of disconnection and isolation.
I did for many years become withdrawn from society with no friends and no social activities and was quite depressed, and was doing a lot of programming, but in a way it was a way to hide from life and people and my own issues, even my own self really. It’s hard to be aware of who you really are when you’re separate from everyone, because sharing is a key element in human health and wellbeing.
So it is a bit of a push-pull thing. But maybe that’s just me, I think I probably work better as part of a group.
You could turn that into a comic and profit [quote=“Tzan, post:13, topic: 648330, username:Tzan”] Feeling bad about working in Games
I remember when I was stuck in a video game cabinet, building wooden barrels for Donkey Kong to throw at Mario.
It was hot and cramped in there. I got too many splinters to count. Do you have any idea how many barrels get used in a day?
Sure its kind of satisfying knowing your work is literally taking the life of a stupid plumber who cant mind his own business. Shouldn’t he be fixing a toilet or something?
I did get paid in gold coins but they were only good in the arcade.
How i personally think of it, YOU cannot make the better, you can only make the world of the people around you better, so even if you are totally anti social and talk to 5 people, you can still make those 5 people world’s better.
Want to help more people? That 1 guy that always get bullied in school, be nice to him for once. That 1 colleage at work nobody talks to, talk to him!
You cannot make the world better, but you can make the world from people around you better.
If you join a charity, you have a bigger group around you, but its still only a small selected group. You can never help the whole world.
With making games it’s the same, I don’t have that much friends etc. I can completly lose myself in games, so if i would enjoy your game, you made my world better, or alteast for when i played it.
When all of the world’s problems are fixed and we no longer have to work because all the robots are providing all our needs. The only thing that will be left will be games. Probably we will have to introduce the real possibility of actual death just to make them more exciting at that point. What we might do is divide the population into two or three “teams” then let them “compete” by inventing weapons…
Like, democracy, games and sport, are ways of simulating war without anyone getting killed. So not a bad thing. Unless you consider the need for occasional mass extinctions to accelerate evolution necessary in which case it is a bad thing and will lead to us eventually becoming extinct… which is a good or bad thing depending on your beliefs.
