do I need to rig my model in unity3d if I already have it rigged in maya or 3dmax?

I am new to unity so I decided to start watching some tutorials and stuff, however, when it comes to the riggin process of the model importation I get a little bit lost. Should I use the riggin mechanism unity offers instead of rigging my model using software like 3dmax or maya?, what is the purpose of unity’s riggin mechanism?

Hi - Unity does not rig your models for you, it requires the importing of skinned rigged meshes. It will however re-target any humanoid animations to your humanoid rigged model. So if you can rig in Max or Maya thats great, otherwise you can also use third party rigging solutions like Mixamo. In any case here are a few links to help out:
