Do I need to uninstall first before installing the newer version of Unity?

Either I uninstall the old first before installing the new, but wouldn’t uninstalling remove all my saved preferences?

Or I install the new without bothering to uninstall the old first, but I don’t want to screw things up.

I usually nstall the new version first. Nothing bad has ever happened.

Installing the new version over the old one works fine for me. But make sure to backup your project before you try to open it with the updated version of the editor as it might destroy something in the process of conversion.

Ah, tried it. Installing the new one automatically removes the old one first as part of the overall install process.

I have Unity 2.6 and 3.1 installed. I posted this question Unity Answers (thread: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/31527/can-you-have-two-versions-of-unity-installed). After I had 2 versions, I changed my settings so that on load up it showed the project wizard (edit-> Preferences then check the load project wizard on start up box) so that way if I opened a project on 2.6 that I did not what in 3.1 (you can not convert it back) then you don’t open it on accident. Hope this helps!

Edit: Make sure that you rename the install directory and then install the other version (or it will replace the other version).
