It’s been over a decade since I used a Mac, but at the time I remember the mouse only had one button, and no scroll wheel, and I’m curious if this is still the case.
I’m testing a mouse-and-keyboard-only interface for controlling a jet-fighter game, and I’m planning on making heavy use of right clicking (for centering the controls) and the scroll wheel (for zooming the radar range in and out).
Will this alienate Mac users, or have Macs since added right-click buttons and scroll wheels to their mice?
Macs have always supported right-click and scroll wheels. The mice that Apple makes have been single-button affairs until several years ago, but that’s a different issue. Most people use a third-party mouse regardless of who makes the computer (do you use the cheap crappy mouse that came with your Windows box?), especially since laptops don’t come with a mouse at all.
Jon, do you mean the Apple Magic Mouse? If so… Not sure that many people use that to play games. I have one, but I also have a “gaming” mouse as well that I use a lot more.
Macs actually don’t use any buttons anymore unless you are on a macbook touchpad, mac is like a sextoy shop nowadays, its all about touching even on mice
Tell me about it, that mouse where you have to run your finger across it to scroll like a scroll on a normal mouse or the slight right and left pressure points, what gives with that?
hey its at least a mouse … for some months now we basically see what the next or next-next apple generation will focus on with the track pad … feels like a step 2 decades back to the days when we used the good old balls of pain cause the straining impact on the muscles is equal
Thanks all for your input. So I’m leaning towards using right-click and scroll-wheel functionality, since it sounds like many will have that regardless of the platform.
The one thing you should consider is that people using the MagicMouse do have right-click and scroll-wheel capability, but due to the way the mouse works, you can not click left and right at the same time. It can click left OR right, but not, say, hold left and click right.
