How’s your proccess to decide on a name for your game? Do you avoid or like subtitles? Do you try to be as descritive as possible? Or being kind of enigmatic is sometimes good?
I use a working title until the game is close to finished. After the game is complete I find naming it to be much easier.
I mostly work under working titles (“space strategy” or “fish shooter” etc). When giving a name, I think it is important to show what the game is mainly about.
I generally decide on the name after the GDD is almost done. I will have an idea of exactly what the game will hold and can name it based on such. As for actually deciding the name, an original name can be hard to come up with. Try translating something you like into extinct languages (my own game’s title is Latin and a game I’m helping on has some Gothic in the title).
nope.
Any project I do I always decide on the name and logo first. I feel like this is really important to lay down a coherent vision of the concept to keep you focused. It’s almost like making a sigil to me, if your familiar with that (look it up).
I’ll decide on a name and a logo, or just a font for the name to be in, then that name in that font will forever act as the sort of ‘seed’ for my creative thought process. The remembering of that logo, name and font becomes sort of like the key to access a portion of my memory to reopen the internal creative dialogue on the matter in a focused controlled manner. It becomes almost like a mantra in a sense. I can repeat the name of the game and imagine it’s logo/font and reorient my brain to focus on it and start putting energy to it, to continue creating it.
So for me atleast, it’s important to first pick out a name, font and logo that I feel represents the entire vision and direction of the entire project. In fact for alot of projects, I will start to hone the initial idea by just going to dafont.com and putting in a working name, then looking at that name in different fonts to see what sort of moods and feelings it invokes, and ultimately what kind of overall vision for the project it will invoke.
Because of this I feel like I’m really good at coming up with names, symbols and fonts that represent something quite well.
I do pretty much the same as Techmage. Only, I take things a step further and Google the name I want to use, and make sure either A) no games are using the title at all, or B) modify the title slightly from the intended, but taken, version, while still keeping the concept of what the gameplay should be in my title so that it’s even more apparent to the player as to what to expect.
