does an image target have to be a certain size to be recognized at 7 to ten feet away?

I am using the free unity version of ar kit. my target image is printed on a standard sheet of paper and takes up about 65% of the page. I literally have to get within a foot of the image for the app to recognize the target image. ideally I want to be 7 to ten feet away and when the image is seen produce the AR character. is it that my target image is too small? I am using a Mac and deploying to an iphone11. if that matters?

ok I am really disappointed. I though this forum was a place that people would help with their experience.
best I can tell, the answer to my own question is - “yes the target image will need to be a certain size to be seen by the app at that distance.” I increased the size of my image target to 43" wide and the app can pick it up at 5 feet. I intend to make larger target images to see if I can get to the ten foot range. I read a thread that if you are using vuforia, the target image should fill approx. 40% of the camera. I don’t know if that is true as I did not use vuforia, but hopefully this information will help someone else besides me.
