I don’t know why, maybe it’s just because I’m an indie developer, but I am finding myself more and more enjoying short games. Like games that you can deplete the fun out of in like an hour or two.
I feel like long games require so much investment of time, so much build up, and for what self amusement? I feel like games should be like quick little tokens of stress relief. Like a music video, or short music album.
I’ve recently bought, and thought was really awesome, super meat boy, dishonored, pid, natural selection 2, lostwinds 2. These games are all cool, but I just spent like 2 hours playing them, and the novelty wears off and I’m like, why am I playing this? The gameplay is interesting, but I’ve already gone through it. It’s not like this game is really doing anything beneficial for me, it’s not like the story is going to blow my mind or anything. Then I lose interest.
I just want something quick and cool that me and my friends can play with and be entertained with for a little bit. Like a toy or something.
Anyone else starting to feel this way about games?
I find personally that some short games can be quite addicting. Like those toss the w/e as far as you can, I love those kind. For example those Yeti flash games. Those were big hits and so simple and easy. But very fun and addicting. So I am with you there.
I’m a huge fan of simple games for mobile phones and I can’t force myself to play FPS, RPG and similar on my phone no matter the graphics, no matter the rating. I’ll play those kinds of games on PC and consoles. Phones are for simple games, mainly to play something while I’m on the toilet. Tablets are a bit different for me, I like to play racing games on it.
I do like simplicity but with enough addictivity to play the same level again to get a bigger score. Example for me would be Angry Birds: Rio, I’m still playing it on the toilet trying to find all of those hidden bananas, pinneapples or whatever else (still haven’t found them all). That game is fairly simple, but addictive and offers me the replayability that suits me. I have nothing against short games which you will finish and uninstall after 2 hours but I prefer simple and short games with replayability (key feature for me).
Well, I love escape room games, and they’re generally one room games
I like short and long games, I see your point though. But it takes me more than 2 hours to burn out on a game, depending on how much it engages me. If a game is made really well, I could play it for 100 hours(not straight :S) w/o getting bored.
