I’m finding the licensing for Unity confusing. Does the plain Unity package have a 30-day trial limit on it, or is that just for Unity Pro?

Thats just for the Pro trial. The free unity has no time limit (and can also be used commercially)
That is just for the Pro trial.
Once the pro trial expires, you’ll need to either purchase and register a Pro version of Unity, or register your free copy so you can use the free version.
The PRO and FREE versions are one and the same install/download.
Upon the firsttime you start Unity, it askes you to register the copy you installed. (PRO of Free)
If you choose PRO, it activates all the PRO features for a 30 day limit, afterwards, you can either purchage the PRO license to continue use the same unlocked features, OR you can revert to the FREE license, which has less features, but is free and unlimited to use. (and can be used for commercial usage freely)
