Don,t write it for me! Help me write it better

WALL OF TEXT INCOMING!

Ok now, I know what you are thinking, another one of these guys. You know the ones, they just found Unity a few weeks ago and have aspirations of writing the next Call of Duty or World of Warcraft. They fire it up and say Oh cool, I made a capsule!!!1!. Then the problems set in, how do I make it move? I cant make it shoot, can you write a script for me? Then the flames commence. Let me get this out of the way right now. I am not that guy.

Alright, by now you have either closed this post and written me off as a noob or your morbid curiosity got the best of you… Let me explain a little further. Tonight when I got home from work I fired up a project I have been working on and got to scripting. I struggled with getting something done and just could not make it work. I tried and tried, I failed and I failed, but that did not stop me! I continued to sift through posts and tutorials and a few hours later i did it. I won, Victory! Well not soo fast, although I did accomplish my goal I noticed a few things.

  1. There is a ton of useful knowledge on these forums that helped me feel like the next coding maniac.
  2. There are equal parts of people that jump into this thinking that it would be cool. Start too big, or just flat have no damn idea what they are doing. And get ground into dust for such a crime.
  3. I read alot of posts on I am not going to do this for you followed by a link to the docs or a tutorial.
  4. And finally, after I learned how to do what I was looking to do. Instead of the 75 lines of code it took me to accomplish said task. I discovered a way to do the same thing in 20 lines. It was cleaner, it looked way more awesomer and it just worked better.

Soooo, after all that post surfing I never saw a single one that had a code snippet that someone posted that showed look what i did. Followed by a good job, but you know if you changed X, Y and Z it would be much better/cleaner. So here is what I am asking of you code gurus. Plenty of people make things that work but there are better ways to do it. To me thats the way you learn, you try, you put in the work, you fail. It pisses you off and you keep trying until you get it done.

After all this nonsensical babbling here is what I propose. I love video games. I love creating things. I love the challenge of figuring things out. With that said I am also anal retentive enough to know I do now know everything and my is not the best way but I want to learn. I have children, I have a full time job and schooling is not an option at this time.

OK, still reading? here is the deal. I would like to treat this thread as a learning resource. I promise I will not post any code that is incomplete or does not work. I will post something I have been working on, or others for that matter and it can then be refined. I am not asking you to do work, only to check it, make it better, help teach.

These are forums however so I do expect flammage for the wall of text or stupid idea. Either way let me know if anyone else thinks this is an acceptable idea.

TLDR; Will you analyze my code that I got working and help me refine it.

Thank ya,

KindalD

Ok.

Without writing it for you, no.

WOW - I got sucked in.

To the Op (no offence I know u have good intentions)

Many users for years now have talked of a second forum for the novice coder. We the community should propose a beginners course to complete before being allowed to enter the forum. When I first started Unity years ago, one of the coolest higher-ups at unity pulled me over (so to speak) with a private message, kind of scolding me about my post title and how it messes up the whole search engine. Ofc I have high respect for the un-named moderator so I did just what he said no problem. It’s frustrating when you have a serious paying project on the line and your topic gets knocked to page three never to be answered cause some one wanting to know about general discussion keeps bumping there post to the top.

TY for the rant time. Now on to something useful for the Op. codecademy.com is a good place to take a course in Js OR C# if you prefer. In a way it has what your looking for, with a way to check your work and see good coding practices. If you have questions about code, there are many skilled forum trolls trolling around the general discussion section of the forum. If you have a script your working on and have an error this is the place to be, as the community chi is strong when helping those who help them selves. There is no fast way to learn code. we all have to start out as a white belt and train for years to get the black belt in code-fu. Gather all the free scripts you can and look at the format styles and techniques scripter’s are using. And PM me anytime for help and paid projects lol. I tell my kids all the time who both write script - go back and study it again. Best of luck.
