Don't understand Render Graph Unity 6

Hello everyone!

I’m having trouble with Unity 6, I just installed it and as soon as I unchecked the “Compatibility mode of Render Graph” box, nothings is rendered on Build on android. I don’t understand what to do even if I read some document of what is Render Graph.

I’m trying to do this because I have an alert message telling me that the old rendering method will be obsolete (if I understood correctly)

Is there anything else I can do to use render Graph simply? I used an empty project with the SRP 2D template. I imported a spritesheet for a 2D animation but nothing appears on my mobile screen.
Everything seems correct in the Unity “play mode” window

If I recheck the compatibility option, my 2D animation does not work correctly on my Android build

I would like to point out just in case that it works very well with the previous LTS version of Unity.
I don’t use any packages in my project, it’s a simple 2D mini game with no lighting, no post processing. So I would like to know if I’m missing something or if it’s normal that it seems so complicated?

In case you did not discover it yet, this thread has a lot of context about RenderGraph .

This might be a bug, can you send a bug report? It should work in Compatibility Mode.

With RenderGraph, if you’ve created RenderFeatures or ScriptableRenderPass’s, or if you have included an asset from a third party that includes those, then these need to be modified to work with RenderGraph.

How can I convert one to the RenderGraph? I have a 2D game which I have moved to Unity 6 (6000.0.4f1) from Unity 2022.3.18. The screen goes completely black in the editor (game window) except UI when compatibility mode is disabled.

You should find in your Console warnings about the ScriptableRenderPasses that don’t implement the RecordRenderGraph function:

These effects that throw this warning need to be updated based on this documentation.

Thanks for the quick reply, wish I saw it earlier!
I actually had errors rather than warnings which made me realize I had a totally different issue but I will post incase anyone else runs into the same issue which drove me crazy with a super simple resolution.

The errors I got were:
" Renderer2D Pass/Setup PostFX passes: Missing resolve surface for attachment 0
UnityEngine.GUIUtility:ProcessEvent (int,intptr,bool&) "

and

" EndRenderPass: Not inside a Renderpass
UnityEngine.GUIUtility:ProcessEvent (int,intptr,bool&) "

I forgot to create a new Render Pipeline asset and assign it to the Default Render pipeline in the Graphics section in Project settings. There may be a more specific fix, but my game is relatively simple and this worked for me. I don’t know a huge amount about the Render Graph or how it works, I pretty much heard that there are performance benefits and wanted to implement it.

Thanks for the help!

I did find the more specific issue:

The rendering goes completely black when Anti Aliasing (MSAA) is NOT set to disabled in the URP asset. This happens to all camera’s which have Subpixel Morphological Anti-aliasing selected.

Hi,

The MSAA in DX11 and DX12 does not work in RenderGraph, please fix it asap

It works in Vulkan or Compatibility mode directly though, so is a renderGraph bug

This is extreme major issue

File a bug report if it’s in the latest Unity 6 release

I have a few questions.

  1. Where’s the full doc of using the RenderGraph API? I found multiple all conflicting and have functions that no longer work the way the docs suggest u use them
  2. WHY does an empty project start with compatibility mode ON? WITH WHAT is it supposed to be compatible? The previous version that DOESNT EXIST?
  3. WHY when you createa new render feature it creates a 300 line file with the compatibility modes code in there?
  4. How did it get here? Does anyone think this is ok? Even the unity docs suggest using obsolete functions, that only work in compatibility mode.

To anyone still struggling with this since unity is alergic to documentation -
there was a webinar some time ago that showed a lot about how to use render graph and they have a project showing a bunch of features. This was the best documentation i found anywhere. hope this helps! FIX YOUR DOCS
