So, I’ve been trying to download and install Unity for 3 days and still can’t get it to work.
Here are the list of issues that I am facing:
The download assistant is buggy and sloppy. Whenever I choose a different install location in my hard drive (i.e F: partition), it is still installing to the C: partition.
There are missing components. For example, I can’t see the Windows and iOS build support.
Forcing us to use this tool to download such a big size (Unity + Doc + Std Assets + Example Project + VS = 12.6 GB) is nonsense. My internet got disconnected several times due to a power outage. There should be another way to download these components separately, otherwise, consider adding a “Resume” button when a blackout occurs.
When I finally got it installed and when I created a new project, it took a long time to load the editor then Voila! a crash report had kicked off, asked me to send that report to the Unity engineering team.
Are there any obvious solutions to these problems?
You wouldn’t see Windows build support when installing Unity on Windows for the same reason you don’t see Mac build support when installing Unity on Macs.
You misunderstood the forcing part. All I am saying that the Unity team is forcing us to use the assistant tool as a whole, not the components. They got to make these packages available for download separately as EXEs or MSIs. Yes, I choose whatever components I need. However, docs and example project are as important as Unity, especially when it comes to learning the stuff. And don’t forget the standard assets. And yes, I did try to open it after the bug report. Same result. But i guess you meant to ask this, “Did I try to open Unity after the Unity team replied to my report?”
I didn’t say Mac build, I said iOS build. Plus, I saw the screenshots from Unity’s installation instructions showed those builds. In addition, there are several complaints from different users regarding the same issue. If this is true, then how can we target platforms? … And ok, let’s assume that this is true, why can’t I see the iOS build support while I am installing this in Windows?
Screenshots can be out of date (e.g. Mac support used to be a separate download in the Mac version and now it’s not, so I assume the same is true of Windows), and I don’t know about iOS support, but speaking of the installation instructions, perhaps you missed the section about installing without the assistant?
Nope, I didn’t miss it but the funny thing is that I just couldn’t understand it. The manual says that I can download and install all of the components separately, without using the Download Assistant and then install using CLI. The question is, where are the links to the separate components?
I explicitly googled using strict keywords in order to get this link. However, the drawback is that builds are not included, which I still have to use the assistant to download them.
Yes, but unfortunately, it didn’t work. I clicked on the 5.4.2f2 and I got a “Bad Gateway” message. Looks like it’s temporarily down. I will check it in a while.
Eric, your link worked and it is exactly what I am looking for. But how come we download these stuff from an external link? Unity team should make newcomers’ life easier.
In any case, thanks a lot for your patience and help.
You should download f2 and stop there. If you’re affected by a project-stopping bug that’s fixed in p1, then download p1 instead, but otherwise don’t download patch releases because they don’t get as much QA (IOW they might break other things). Anyway I think the vast majority of people are fine with the download assistant.
You don’t “need” visual studio, but I HIGHLY recommend it. Overall it is a much better code editor with a very powerful debugger. I also like its coloring and code prediction (just my opinion). All the professional coders I’ve seen and known use Visual Studio as well. I’ve had many issues with Monodevelop crashing, or not starting at all.
In the download assistant, Unity can add some tools so Visual Studio’s debugger will work with Unity. However, Visual Studio itself can be downloaded here: https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/ Without going to that link, having the Visual Studio tools is pointless.
There’s nothing wrong with using Monodevelop, but I recommend Visual Studio.
