I’m trying to install Unity 5.3.1 on my Macbook, but when I launch Unity Download Assistant.app, nothing seems to happen, other than the icon appearing at the bottom. I’m primarily a PC user, but I’ve installed Unity at least 2 or 3 other times prior to this on my Macbook, and now it’s not doing anything. Am I doing something wrong? Is this Download Assistant really necessary? Does it really serve a purpose that Unity developers can’t figure out without it? Can someone send me a link to the direct download link?
You can download the components individually but it you have having troubling right click and launch. Check your console logs. Open a command console and do a sudo ps.
That reminds me though that on Windows the Download Assistant is leaving gigabytes of Unity install files in IE caches that Windows Disk Cleanup ignores so I have to find them and delete manually. ![]()
The download assistant allows you select what you want to install, what you on a 32 or 64bit machine?
hmm odd, I’ll check this out. Which version of Windows?
It’s Windows 10 with patches. I found the files the 1st time manually and the second time I googled and used a utility called ‘Tree Size Free’. I freed over a gig but not quite 2 gigs the 2nd time. 1st time was 3 gig.
I was also told (i.e. read via an search engine search) Windows 10 isn’t in general calculating used disk space correctly too. Windows 10 is an interesting way of Microsoft doing an OS now, it causes trouble and it’s clear they are doing total rewrites too in portions of the sub-systems.
This is what I see in the Console window:
1/25/16 1:44:39.130 PM Unity Download Assistant[711]: Failed to connect (customSheet) outlet from (AppDelegate) to (NSPanel): missing setter or instance variable
1/25/16 1:44:39.325 PM Unity Download Assistant[711]: *** -[__NSArrayM objectAtIndex:]: index 18446744073709551615 beyond bounds [0 .. 0]
I launched a terminal, and typed “sudo ps”, entered the password, but I’m not sure what this does. Any more details on this?
I’m on a 64-bit machine. I don’t even get to a point that allows me to select which target. I double click on the .dmg, then, double click on Unity Download Assistant.app, and nothing happens, other than the app icon appearing in the dock.
Sorry…I meant to say you need a long listing of the ps output it would have show you if Unity Download Assistant was running but as it stands it doesn’t look to be so forget what I told you.
For your console error for the Download Assistent it looks to be Unity needs to help you with that but it does sort of superficially look like it might be a permission problem.
I was hoping it was just a permission problem. Any good links to how to run in “admin” mode on Mac? Total Mac n00b, I apologize.
Try the patch release instead. Lots of people are having trouble with 5.3.1’s installer.
Ah thanks! I didn’t realize there were several patch releases already. I tried using the Download Assistant under Patch 4, but ended up with the same results as above. So I’m just downloading the Editor Component Installer instead, which is what I prefer anyway.
I’d still love to get any updates as to when the Download Assistant is fixed, or if I am indeed doing something wrong.
There might be something else wrong with your system if none of them work. The best test is to create another account on your system and ensuring it has admin access, then installing there. If it works, the other account is somehow broken. If it doesn’t, reinstall the OS or at least try the latest combo patch, which usually fixes permission issues in weird places.
If it is a permission problem, when I had os X it would ask for proper password to run at elevated permissions but vanilla os X installs I don’t believe do that.
If some type of permission problem is wrong, do like the link below shown, although I’m not convinced that’s the problem it’s easy enough to try.
I also get an error everytime I run the Download Assistan on Windows about not having enough free space but by the time the old version of Unity components are deleted there is a enough room.
I also remember the Download Assistant failed to download and install most Unity components the very first time I ever ran it but on subsequent runs of that version and later versions of the Download Assistant it works.
They do. If admin privileges are required, and the logged in account is an admin, it always asks for a password. Unless something is very, very wrong with the installation ![]()
There will be more in-depth logs made by installer attempts. Run Console to get at those.
Hmm, looks like I’ll need the Download Assistant after all, since I am building for iOS and the iOS Support module is only available through that. I’ve verified that I am using an Admin account. Anyway, here are more details.
So I’d love to know from UT the details about the error I posted above that I am reposting here for convenience:
1/25/16 8:46:03.046 PM Unity Download Assistant[894]: Failed to connect (customSheet) outlet from (AppDelegate) to (NSPanel): missing setter or instance variable
1/25/16 8:46:03.228 PM Unity Download Assistant[894]: *** -[__NSArrayM objectAtIndex:]: index 18446744073709551615 beyond bounds [0 .. 0]
Which version of OS X is this on?
Ah… I forgot to add that in my last post and I intended to. I am not updated to El Capitan if that makes a difference. I’m still on Yosemite 10.10.5.
Might be UT who did something special that only works on newer versions then. Your log entries are very strange, and quite minimal. I expect installers to crap out a page full of stuff ![]()
(Even things that aren’t error messages can be vital for context in logs!)
Sorry i replied to this just before I left work, I’ll get someone to look into this. I don’t think it has to do with the older version as I’m also on Yosemite still and not had any troubles. For now download the Editor by itself and I’ll try and find a way to send you the iOS Playback Engine if I can.
Actually, for now could you possibly try downloading the iOS target support from this list, this is from the Release Candidate, I’m not sure it will work with the later version but it’s worth a shot.
Download the Editor from here http://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive
Then the iOS target support from here http://unity3d.com/unity/beta/unity5.3.0f2
Make sure it’s in the PlaybackEngine folder of the Unity folder.
