Download models from Unity Asset Store and modify them using 3d modelling software

Hello,

I’m new to the asset store and found a free unity car which I fell in love with instantly. I downloaded it (in Unity) and made it work using scripts. I have done everything I need including lights, skid marks, realistic camera control and more. The the time came to animate the wheels. I click on a wheel and the whole model is selected. I double click it again but the same results. I go inside its prefab and see that the model is made up of only 2 meshes. The wheels can in no way be selected as they are 1 with the car.

I really like the car and decided to put some of my modelling skills to use. I want to open the the model in blender and modify the car so that the wheels can be separated from the car.

Is there any way I can export the model from Unity in a 3d format? Even if I had to re-download the car, it would still be fine. Is this what I want to do even legal? If so, how can I do this?

Here is the car:

You can import an FBX to Blender, but Mesh only. I imagine this is fine for what you want. You need to import it rather than Open it.

I can’t advise you on legal issues. Perhaps contact the Unity Asset Store team and read the licenses supplied with the model.

Also, its quite common to cheat with circular and repeat motion. Instead of turning the wheels, you can actually just turn the textures and it will look the same.
