Dropping into the void

Hi guys,

I have been developing the logic of my game, which is working perfectly, and am now looking at the graphics, lighting, shaders etc.

Just in general terms (I don’t need code, just some instructions) how would I achieve this:

  1. My background is a black void (e.g. space)
  2. My scene is a spotlit plane with several objects on it. If an object falls off the plane, it is swallowed up by the blackness relatively quickly

Any ideas on how to set up lights, background planes, shaders etc to achieve the moody scene, with falling objects swallowed up in the blackness?

I guess I need a spotlight with high attenuation, low ambient scene light (if any), some sort of hazing/fogging as the object falls out of camera range?

Sounds like you’ve got some good ideas with the lights already. My input:

  • set the camera’s background color = black
  • add fog (Edit → Render Settings) and make it black or nearly black
  • after objects fall below a certain Y value, just destroy them to limit unnecessary calls
  • when an object falls off, you could change the layer it’s on, and make the light on that layer fade out. It would appear that the object got swallowed up by blackness.

Hey awesome - thanks!

Got the black fog working, and made the ambient light in the scene really black. Also added a black material to the skybox.

Looking pretty good actually - but would be nice to get that light falloff with layers you mentioned.

What do I look at for further help to drop the light off on a specific layer?

Also, any ideas how to get distance hazing? Fog just seems to ‘grey out’ the colour, but not blur the edges as the distance from the camera increase?
