Dual Install of 2.6 and 3

Hi All,

I’m stuck working two projects, one has been converted to 3 and the other has just been started on 2.6. Basically my school hasn’t upgraded, and I need to be able to move the project between my home PC and the schools.

Is it possible to install both 2.6 and 3 to different directories? I’m afraid to try and damage licenses, cause library issues, etc.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Yah, I have done that. Seems ok. Install 2.6, rename the folder, install 3. I’m on a Mac.

Thanks, let’s see if this works!

Be careful not to add any spaces or non-alpha numeric characters to the folder name as that has been reported to cause problems.

Also go into preferences and turn on “Show Project Wizard at Startup”

Thanks for the heads up. I’m on PC, had 2.6 install, upgraded to 3, then reinstalled 2.6 in a different directory. Everything seems OK, but I did have to change the name of the project folder which was upgraded due to not turning on “Show Project Wizard”

Speaking of the upgrade to 3, has anyone noticed OnCollisionExit function problems since upgrading to 3? I’ve had some weird lack of execution on some objects since the move.

Mac or PC?

Haven’t had any issues as yet on Windows, with both “Unity 2.6.1” and “Unity 3” named as such (minus quotes of course). But then I also don’t ever install anything into Program Files, which seems to be the pit of despair as far as well, installing anything in there these days lol. Course, the way my day is going, some horrific error will probably appear any moment now for me! :stuck_out_tongue:

WIN 7 Pro
I have Unity 2.6 installed under: C:\Program Files (x86)*Unity*\Editor.

  1. Will not the 3.0 install prompt for a location to install?

  2. does the 3.0 install need anything from the 2.6 to properly install?

  3. Can I not just install Unity 3.0, as follows: C:\Program Files (x86)*Unity3*\Editor. ?
…then copy any project from the 2.6 lcoation to the 3.0 location, and the Editor will convert the project upon 1st load?

AFAIK it’s a Mac only issue. On the PC side I have one in /Unity 2.6.1/ and the other in /Unity 3.0/ and so far no issues.

  1. Yes, on the PC side it will prompt you for a folder name which you can change. But the Start menu won’t change, so the start menu will launch which ever version you installed last.
  2. No.
  3. Sure that’ll work with the above caveat. I keep separate folders to hold all my 2.6 projects separately from my 3.0 projects. Fortunately, Unity saves the preferences separately for 2.6 and 3.0 which makes it easier not to update a 2.6 project by accident.

Thank you for the thorough answers… I have installed as stated above… everything is working great… installation was swift and issues-free…
I am able to pass anything from the 2.6 setup to the 3.0 without problems so far.
Unity Tech did a great job in keeping the 2 versions completely separate… couldn’t ask for better.

Dual install did not work well for me in windows - installed v3 to Unity3 folder.
.unity files still open with 2.6
in Uninstall (control panel - programs and features) there is only one uninstall for Unity.
So install system should be cleaner - check for existing installs, give option to upgrade or replace… etc etc

Yes, the Unity 3 installer could be better. It appears that it keeps separate registry data for both versions but it overwrites the Start menu items. The separate uninstall apps are still there, you just need to look in the application’s folder.

The company I’m contracting for wants to be able to install Unity 3 alongside the Unity 2.6 install currently on this machine (to compare performance, features, stability, etc for this specific project we are developing), however we’re using a Pro license and have already registered the serial with my workstation at my studio and this workstation here at the office. Will this prevent me from being able to do a dual install with Unity 3?

The 2.6 licence shouldn’t stop you from installing the free version of 3.0 for evaluation (but as always, be sure to rename the 2.6 folder so that it doesn’t get overwritten by the 3.0 installation process).

Trouble is we want to try out the new pro capabilities.

i had the free 2.6 and installed the trial of three and i can see the pro features… for a few more weeks .

OnCollisionExit and OnTriggerExit seem broken

I need to reinstall 2.6 because U3 breaks my code.

Can someone point me at a download link to the 2.6 installer?

There are none.
