EA tones down Real Racing free-to-play elements after user backlash

Wow, great that they’re forced to change their ways, even a little.

Call me a firestarter, but I’m happy to see more and more people (players, popular game blogs, or even ex AAA devs) voicing their discontent against what the industry has slowly become in recent years.
The bubble was bound to burst one day.

(now if the majority of mobile gamers would be more inclined to pay more than 1$ for an app, maybe we wouldn’t see such business models, though)

I agree n0mad.

Hows Kinetic Damage coming along?.. waiting to buy it

I will answer that for you…its free-to-play, but every punch is $.99 IAP.

JOKING!

lol It wouldn’t surprise me if someones made a fighting game where you run out of stamina and have to pay for more.

Thanks for asking
I’ll make it short for not derailing the thread : on the last 0.0000000001% (multiplayer synchronizing), and it’s a real nightmare. But it’s shaping up well

haha xD
Actually the way specials and combos are managed ingame could totally makes them In-App purchaseable (and lots of business friends suggested me to do that way), but there’s no way I could bear such gating as a gamer, so I won’t do that.
This model could work without being a letdown for gamers, but only in the case where a player have to chose a limited amount of (but still large) doable actions among a huge pool of different ones (here, specials). But I’m not there yet.
League of Legends pretty nailed it.

The IAP is not evil in principle, it’s just how it has been abused nearly systematically that made it horrible, imho.

edit : posting answer to Keith’s post below here, so thread is not derailed :

It’s precisely how KD will be : free with 2 martial arts + one level, and an IAP for the full game (= everything else).
I thought this was a good way not to cripple the store with 2 different versions of the same game (which is not good for tracibility too).

To tell how much IAP are not welcomed by players, I litterally had to put in bold letters on every place I linked the trailer that there will be no IAP (except full game), as I knew the ingame currency system would scare a lot of people, confusing it with an IAP system.

I even had a gamer that wasn’t liking the sole concept of full game IAP.

People are really hurt by recent industry IAP practices. You just have to look at comments on game blogs, forums, etc to see how rejected it is.

Thanks  I don’t know what’s your phone model, but game is running at 30 fps on a 3GS

IMO , id like a hybrid model were for 5$ or so you can have a full version of the app , no IAP , or you could have a free version .

My beef with IAP is that these devs are getting crazy with pricing . On the Simpsons tap game the max purchase was 100$ worth of digital donuts .

Seriously !? Can you say charge back , I take issue with any game that wants more then 10$ in one purchase out of gamers . People let their kids use their phones( and before you say ohh set a password, we all forget at times ) and this is a nightmare waiting to happen . Plus consumable F2P goods are extremely bad , if your phone is damaged or stolen, or your save is corrupted and you have to re-install, you can’t get your consumables back .

So that guy who paid 100$ for digital donuts then has to re-install the game, and he’s out 100$ .

Looking forward to Kinectic Damage, hopefully I’ll have a faster phone by then !

“As noted by Pocket Gamer, the game features cars that can only be bought with real money, with at least one vehicle going for the equivalent of $100. Players were also required to wait in real-time for their car to repair itself after a set number of races, unless they are willing to fork out cash to repair instantly.”

Holy crap… where do I find customers like that? :open_mouth:

And most importantly, who had the idea that selling $100 things in a game was profitable and actually approved of it, despite knowing that the current industry standard for “completed” games are around $60?!
