I am looking for reliable way to edit mixamo animations in maya or 3d max. Does anybody have experience with these sort of things? What to watch out for, downsides and gotchas? Anything that could shorten the time for getting the workflow right.

I believe there are (were) two rigs available to retarget the animation to. One biped and one CAT rig.
Once you locate one of those rigs (which ever you prefer) use animation layers or the motion mixer to edit the animations and bake down to create new animations.
Since adobes purchase I haven’t been on the mixamo site so I dont know if those animation rigs are still available.
There are several videos on youtube that detail these rigs and how to get the animations into Max.
The rigs are important because using them simplifies the process of retargeting/editing. Editing on a straight FK rig is not easy/recommended unless it is simple non-IK limb edits.
