Editor font regression 2023.3

The editor font is getting smaller and smaller. not easy on the eyes at all.
There is now a default blurry font rendering.

And even when put on sharp it still worse than the old unity font of 2022.

Please unity don’t make it harder to read.

Do you know why this is?

There is a way to sharpen the default font in Unity?

Anyway, I haven’t noticed a difference between 2021.3 and 2023.3 sharpness-wise but the characters do feel smaller in 2023.3.

( changing the sharpening is added in 2023 )

Yes they feel smaller, maybe its kerning that has changed but something has changed and its worse.

Oh, I hadn’t noticed.

I do see a difference between the default sharpness and the maximum in your images and in mine too.

And the maximum sharpness is sharper than the 2021.3 default one in 2021.3, as far as I’m concerned.

yes it is, but the kerning/ spacing is different, making it still harder to read ( less polished )

Looks like they are using some SDF library that lacks the most basic quality font rendering features, whatever the reasoning was for it, it is not because of user first, it was the xyproblem they tried to ducktape over with sdf due to technical limiations of their internals.

Here is some more info

The bug is still open so I think it will be addressed.

I don’t know why they thought SDFs were a good choice for the editor, just render text normally at an appropriate size for each screen dpi.

Look how inconsistent it is:

How does unity made it worse than 2023.2?
Can’t we just go back to what we have in 2022?

Even in same settings, the bold texts are noticeably smaller, look to the “Universal Additional Light Data (Script)” line.
Also check the “General/Emission/Rendering/Shadows” title in Light component, 2023.2 are a lot easier to read.

Bitmap mode has so many problems that I started to think they deliberately make it looks bad:

I have similar problem. Don’t understand why put this weird new system instead of using one which worked just fine before?

So I got the beta and saw this, since most people are not using 4k screens I can not understand the decisions that led to this, but I have to hope that bitmap text will become the default before release and will not have any of the bugs some have reported.
I still use the non-default system font because of the blurrier default one that was added ages ago!

Even in UGUI there remain major issues with small font rendering using SDFs.
