Editor randomly freezes, operating system too

Hey everybody,

this is more of a general question about what to do when the editor hangs, especially when I can’t pinpoint exactly where it’s coming from.

I’m working with the new physics articulation features, but also with Crest for URP (magnificent package from the asset store) and with some URP renderer feature that I’m developing (where I am maybe not doing things right).

Anyhow, sometimes the Editor freezes and with it, the whole operating system. I can still move my mouse and sometimes I’m either suddenly back in the macOS login screen, sometimes I get a grey screen of death, but mostly I don’t wait so long and end up holding the power button until my laptop powers off.

After reboot I tried inspecting the Editor.log, but I never found anything unexpected there.

In my specific case it’s on macOS 10.15.6 and Editor 2020.2.0a18, but it also happened with other versions.

Any ideas? I know it’s super broad, but I’m really out of ideas and with such an unspecific case, I can’t even file a valuable bug report.

I’m getting that too
I used to think it was Oculus so I removed it, same
What’s your graphics card? 2060 rtxv with latest drivers

In my 2017 MacBook Pro there’s a Radeon Pro 560 with whatever driver ships with macOS 10.15.6

I don’t really think it’s a driver or hardware problem, but more something that takes a huge amount of time on the graphics card that cannot be interrupted. But why is the mouse still responsive then…? I understand that errors on the graphics card don’t simply produce a stack trace, but can it halt the operating system?

I guess without any messages in any log, I’m at a loss here. I switched back to an older version of unity to continue with the development until everything runs more stable.
