It’s been a good while since I was active on here, so I thought I’ll come back to this warm and friendly place and create a Work In Progress thread to show what I’ve been up to, get some feedback/ crits and to keep track of all the future games art work. Now it may not be too relevant to Unity games engine at the moment (unless I happen to create some environments or render some models using Unity in the future), so I wasn’t sure of the best place where to post this, so if there’s a better place than Gossip, kind moderators feel free to move it there
A quick note: I have posted a similar topic here a while back on a different account (which for some reason is either broken or disabled as I am unable to make posts), so if you want to see some of my oldies from when I just started learning 3D modelling, then please click here: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/69877-3d-modelling
Anyways, a bit about myself… My name is Edvinas Petrauskas (Ed), I’m 18 years old (19 in couple of days) and I have recently accomplished one of my goals - I got into University of Derby to study Computer Games Modelling and Animation, so now I can dedicate my whole self to games art and nothing but games art. Hooray!
I have started the course late September/ early October and it is a 3 year (4 year with a placement) course, so it looks like there’s loads of work and fun ahead (and lots of screenies on this topic ha!).
Or in short… Name: Edvinas Petrauskas Age: 18 Current occupation: Studying BA Computer Games Modelling and Animation at University of Derby (1st Year) Experience: (SELF TAUGHT) 1-2 years using Photoshop, Maya, over 2 years using Unity (incl. scripting in c# and unityscript), 2-3 months and basic knowledge of Zbrush/Mudbox and a bit of UDK/CryEngine 3. Background: 2 years studying IT Practitioners: System Support at college (a very boring and useless course :P) and finishing with Triple Distinction WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE…:AN ASTRONAUT An Environment artist, although there is still plenty of time (3-4 years) to develop the interest in other areas such as Characters/ Creatures modelling, concept art, animation etc.
Below you will find my recent WIP, I will try to update it as often as I can since I’m doing 2D/3D work at uni every day now.
Additional info:
I may be able to offer some free or paid work in 2D/3D games art area when ever I have time. Feel free to post and ask here or email/ PM me if you’re interested. Due to the amount of work I have to do for uni, I will only work for people who are serious about it (In other words, no WE’RE MAKING A MMO LIKE WOW or WE’RE MAKING A FPS LIKE COD BUT BETTER AND NEED A MODELLER).
Got my 1st assignment for the Intro to 3D Modelling module couple of weeks back. We have to design, model, texture and do a beauty render of a Steampunk vehicle.
Budget:
8k tris
1024 texture maps
I came up with the idea to do a steam powered flying vehicle… Here are some old design sheets I did:
Some AO renders of the model:
But the vehicle appeared to be too futuristic and I had hard time trying to come up with ideas how to make it look more steampunkish and less futuristic, so I decided to drop it and design a new vehicle over the weekend instead. It is now a robot-walker vehicle, I re-used some of the parts from the old one but most of the bits are new.
Here’s a concept paintover I did in Photoshop:
Here’s a render of the model so far (most up to date model), it’s still missing some parts like levers, pipes and similar bits:
Wow your stuff’s awesome! I’m pretty sure you’ll do well with your chosen path as long as you keep improving every time. I wish I weren’t born too early, back then we didn’t have game design, programming, and modeling courses in college lol!
BTW, gotto do a bunch of written assignments now through out the rest of today and most likely the whole night as well (again ><) and then going away for the weekend so no WIP updates till later next week I’m afraid!
Ed, awesome stuff. You wanted some feedback - more valves/gears something that would crank that steam pressure up! And something to release it (maybe as a weapon? or to add propulsion to that massive steam engine) you could also make the barrel go into some sort of crazy turbine instead of just shooting out into that big rocket. Integrate that steam tech man!
I have spent the last few nights optimizing the model so it would fit in with the 8k poly limit, and it was way harder than I first thought!! I think I finally managed to do it though, stripped it down to 7986 polys…
wireframe:
AO render:
Hehe thanks for the feedback Would love to tweak the vehicle and do all of that, but the poly budget is tighter than I thought lol, can’t afford to add anything else. Nice feedback though, thanks
UH OH, 2d digital techniques class in less than 3 hours… Means no sleep for Ed again! ><
Looks fantastic. Keep it up. BTW, if you want to get back to the steam punk look, try turning your output pads into wooden containers - you know the kind, they look almost like little wooden kegs of beer (like the barrels used to make wine). It’s the ultra-round surfaces that make it look modern. Octagonal wooden tanks should fix both models right now (pads on 1st, rear facing jet on 2nd).
Did my first environment concept for uni earlier today using Photoshop, a skyrim-inspired entrance to a frozen temple, with a wounded knight leaning against the broken pillar. Everything is off the top of my head, didn’t use any references or anything.
Been extremely busy and haven’t had time to update this topic, sorry about that Here are some of the things that kept me busy…
Finished the steampunk vehicle project, here’s a final render I composed:
It was my first model of this scale/ complexity to be honest, and I really learned a lot through out the development. Kinda glad it’s finally over tho haha.
Here’s some horrible digital painting shizzle too:
^ The guy above is a mixture of photo sourcing and hand painting. Most of the face is photo sourced…
