Efficiency of blender skinned meshes?

Hi!
I’m rigging my first model in Blender and am coming up against a few things that concern me. Namely, what can I do in the rigging that won’t harm performance?

A few options:

  • IK chains
  • Should not affect performance
  • Sharing vertices between 2 bones
  • Seems like it should affect performance
  • Having weights associated with vertices/bones
  • Seems like it would be even worse for performance
  • Lots of deforming bones
  • Also seems like it could be bad

Also, is Unity smart enough to only use deforming bones from blender? i.e., if I have complicated control bones, am I still okay?

The Rig you import into unity will have to be pretty basic (no scripts or tricky stuff).
But you can bake out your rig’s movement to a simplified version of the rig that you skin the character to.

After you have the animation on the simple rig you can ignore the original one when you export.

That way you can use whatever you want on the original rig.
