Email spam from old threads, no way to see a list of threads we're subscribed to

Since the forum converted over to Discussions I’ve been getting these spam emails every week from different threads I’ve replied to over the years. There are a few major problems with this:

  1. The Unity forums automatically subscribed users to threads when they commented, so there are years of old threads where hundreds of people are subscribed without their knowledge. We used to at worst get a little notification on the site that we could ignore, but now we get emails and nobody opted into getting those emails.
  2. There is currently no way to see a list of all the threads you’re subscribed to, or to mass-unsubscribe from them. Now that you’ve converted everyone to receiving emails any time there’s a reply, we have to manually go into each thread as it comes up and unsubscribe.
  3. Why are you sending the full content of each thread reply as an email? Surely that’s a massive anti-pattern, you want people to go to the forum to see the reply. It’s also a potentially serious liability for you as you’re sending emails with arbitrary user-generated content. They could post hate-speech or anything in there and then even if you’ve deleted it from the forum it’s still been emailed out to loads of people.

As my experience shows, the spam sending from old topics is a temporary phenomenon.

Moreover, I have a workaround to normalize “Latest Topics” section on the sidebar:

  1. Profile > Preferences > Navigation Menu > Link to the filtered list > Check
  2. Now you are redirecting to /new section of topics where you participated
  3. Open every post here, scroll to the bottom in every post such way to clear the “new” stack
  4. Now When you click the “Latest Topics” you will get Non-Opened New Posts without sticky hell until there is an update in posts where you participated. When you now have any new messages in posts you subscribed to, there will be only such posts until you will check them all.

I hadn’t even seen the “latest topics” section on the sidebar, that sounds like an entirely other nightmare. I’m just getting all these emails about random posts in random threads I once replied to years ago.

Having just checked the Latest Topics section, it looks like a complete mess full of random topics and I can’t imagine how it even works. Is it some kind of algorithmic feed or topics I maybe viewed once or something?

You can find it in : https://discussions.unity.com/u/[username]/preferences/tracking in your settings.

Clicking “show” on watched will take you to this page.

Latest topics - Unity Discussions

Watched topics is what creates emails, I generally just change these to “Tracked”

Unfortunately, these are so numerous and I don’t see a way to mass unwatch yet.

EDIT:
Also you can disable emails at https://discussions.unity.com/u/[Username]/preferences/emails

Thank you! That’s some bizarre design, hiding this page behind a little “show” link next to a dropdown that specifically is about selecting entire forums to watch. It’s also so many threads, I’m going to have to through all of these individually.

I could disable all emails but I genuinely don’t mind getting notifications when it’s appropriate. I just don’t want to be hounded by emails from random asset threads from 6 years ago that I never opted into. And it’s still very dodgy that they’re sending out the full text of forum posts in emails.

honestly give it a bit of time, this is mostly just teething from porting everything over. I had A LOT at first.

I’m just fixing things as they come, atm I pretty much only get stuff that’s relevant. There’s an occasional necro cause someone replied to a thread, and then I just fix it setting it to tracked.

  1. When you have unread messages (“unread” subtitle is here - can be customized in preferences):

  1. When you check all unread messages, it shows all the new topics and topics with new posts on the platform:

You just access these sections directly via the address bar of web browser.

I didn’t realize you could minimize the left menu like that.

But i use tags to navigate really so i guess it’s not that useful for me
