I’m understand that this might be a strange question, but I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with, or heard of embedding the Unity web player control - within an MS Silverlight or flash object?
Basically, I am working from a system which does not allow the unity object to rub, however it does support Silverlight and Flash players.
I really doubt you’ll find any sort of web-based solution with either technology. I’ve never heard of one and I can say with certainty that the Flash Player will not allow you to do this for web-content, I’m not as familiar with Silverlight but have to imagine the answer there would be similar.
Is there anything we (Unity Technologies) can do to help evangelize/encourage the use of our web player technology?
I think the best way to evangelize the web plugin is to get lots of great Unit content out there that people will want to use and play around with.
A large gallery on your site of different types of uses for the Unity web plugin would be great, along with a categorized index of links to other people’s sites that are using it. Have an easy way for visitors to submit their site for review and inclusion in this directory. Have someone moderate the submissions, and ensure that the “entries” are polished, and really showcase the software. If they aren’t there yet, point them at the resources they might need to get there.
I’m just getting started with Unity, but I really see amazing potential for a multitude of uses for it.
Tom - I think what Chris is trying to say is that he wants to use Unity, and embed it within either the Flash player, or SilverLight. He can’t use the Unity plugin directly because his customer doesn’t support/allow it.
Chris - either way, I don’t think this will be possible. You can’t piggyback one ActiveX control on another - and as for SilverLight, its basically doing what Mono does ( .Net on other platforms) - but there are a bunch of features that have been limited or restricted in SilverLights .Net core - moreover SilverLight is probably less popular than the Unity plugin
As for OSX, I don’t know the browser plugin architecture, but I’m sure it’s similar. Maybe someone else can shed a bit more light on the subject.
All of which we’re doing already and you can expect much more on that front over time. My question could have been phrased better:
Is there anything we (Unity Technologies) can do to help evangelize/encourage the use of our web player technology to this particular client of yours?
I’m happy to talk with your client(s) if they’re nervous and/or hesitant about adopting Unity as a technology. Often it can help assuage client worries if they talk with the tech vendor directly so I was offering my services if Chris feels that is appropriate or that it would help.
And I got that, see my reply above. Given the inability to host Unity content in Flash/Silverlight I wanted to know if there was any way I could help evangelize our tool and player to the client to help them become comfortable with using the Unity Web Player.
