Enlighten best news from GDC aren't even Unity's: Geomerics open world dynamic lighting tech & demo

Okay Unity.
Now you have something to explain: Unity’s lighting is powered by Enlighten, right?
And yet all the time I read about Enlighten, it is promoting their products with Unreal Engine 4 like this AAAmazing demo.

Also, now even CryEngine is full engine source access, so unless you get the best out of Enlighten, might as well ditch them, get your own lighting solution, and let those of us who are serious about lighting go and make a deal with the vendors directly who are constantly updating it and know their product better. Your Enlighten deal is crippled in that sense.

And admittedly, it is not like I have the skills to mess with the engine source but I am pretty certain some Asset Store assets would be greatly improved with source code access and more than that, ‘we can’t open up the engine because of some custom licenses’ isn’t really an excuse but more of a way to slowly dig yourselves into a hole. (No hate here, if Enlighten does not suffer for you, then you should not suffer for them either, though I think it is more of the other way.)

I pretty much doubt those Unity Engine Licensors are doing it for the source but rather support.

Or being honest, I am just bitter we don’t have that while Unreal got it first even while Enlighten is the Unity integrated default lighting solution.

How much does it cost to integrate Enlighten into UE4?

A lot…! Hence why they’re probably more keen to show it in other places.

It isn’t included into UE4 by default. The price is “contact us”.

I remember reading it had become more accessible to indies. Guess I was wrong.

Oh well, on the other hand then that means Unity’s ‘Enlighten deal’ was not really a full license but a partial one and they shouldn’t even advertise it as Enlighten.

Enlighten is… well, continuing to disappoint. Tons of issues(artifacts, horribly slow baking, inconsistency) and it seems that either Geometrics and/or Unity aren’t too worried about fixing it. If I were Enlighten, I’d put a bit more pep in my step about working with Unity to fix the integration of my product which is being showcased in a massively used engine.

That is nice video but you have to wait for that tech to trickle into Unity’s source. It’s not like Enlighten and Unity can leave Unity with 5 year old tech while the graphics HW and SW everywhere else is upgraded in capabilities.

I think they totally can.

Let’s not do boundless speculation.
