and my cannons shoot, however they dont turn to face the tagged enemy, they begin by turning a set amount to the side then no longer move. here is my code

Your code seems ok: it should make the turret local Z axis point to the target that entered the trigger volume. If the turret isn’t pointing to the target, maybe its forward direction isn’t what you expect - a very common problem with imported models, which many times have axes swapped (its forward side points in the right direction, for instance)
If this is the case, create an empty object, attach your script and child the turret model to it - this way you can adjust the model rotation so that the gun points the empty’s Z axis.
