Evolution of Halo (Halo CE)

Hi everyone, I just recently stumbled upon this again on youtube and decided to share it. It’s a documentary from Bungie on how the first Halo evolved from a Mac RTS to an Xbox Exclusive FPS. Very interesting and inspiring. Also, personally, I find that the game graphics of the third person version of the game may look polygonal but still look good even today.

Oh hey, I forgot about those! Good stuff, it’s always great to get such an honest look into the beginnings of a game. Developer Diaries these days are a complete joke and mostly just propaganda, so this is a rare gem. Some indies are doing a great job at this though, Wolfire being one of the best. :slight_smile:

Bungie does very good video documentations. I recomend everyone to go to Bungie.net and looking at the vidocs for all of the Halo games. Very informative and insightful for how they make their games.

Halo Reach:

Here is a video that briefly touches on the development side of things in regards to technical details. I had no idea just how technically advanced Reach was.

Jesus, That was technically advanced. They always seem to find the best solution that uses the least amount of resources but produces best results. That = any game devs dream…

Indeed. Here I thought something like Reach would be possible in Unity, but seeing how much optimization they used and getting numbers for enemies on screen total particle effects and AI scripts, I don’t think Unity could currently produce a game of this magnitude. I think by Unity 4 it would be possible, but currently, with its limited multi-core support I don’t think its possible. Or perhaps it is and I am not thinking creatively enough. Any thoughts? Do you think a game like Reach is possible in Unity now?
