I just want to share an experience I had recently with Buildbox. I used to have a yearly subscription with them but I stopped using the platform 6 months ago. I thought I had cancelled my subscription but a full years payment was taken from my bank this week. As soon as I noticed I reached out to them explaining the situation and politely asked if it would be possible to refund me. I was informed they don’t do refunds!
I think I can still get my money back as in the UK we have certain laws that protect consumers called the distance selling regulations that allow you to cancel a contract within 14 days of payment but I am just annoyed that a company is more interested in grabbing my money that treating an ex-customer with a little bit of respect.
So just a warning if anyone on this forum has a subscription with them that you no longer use… triple-check that you have cancelled the subscription and don’t be foolish like me in believing that you would be treated with a little respect.
Yeah, like literally every subscription service on Earth.
This is how subscription services work in general and how they make their money. This is something that anyone dealing with subscription services is supposed to be aware of, making it user error in this case. There is no point in calling out a specific service like this.
Some US states and other countries have legislations in the pipeline to force companies to allow canceling just as easily as to start a subcscription.
That really cannot come soon enough…
its standard scam. big companies everybody knows does it. little guys do it too.
there is almost always an extra payment and then you got to call to complain about it. Most people don’t call because they are lazy. or they forgot the subscription for a long time even though they dont use it.
welcome to capatilism - it’s war for your money, even if it kills you in the process.
There is a point in calling it out because that is how people are made aware. From other people’s experiences. Your comment was unnecessarily aggressive to someone sharing their experience.
Again, this is practically every subscription service. If somebody does not plan on using a service anymore, the onus is on them, the subscriber, to make sure that they have cancelled their renewal. This is not only the most common practice, but it has been common practice for so long and is outline so specifically in every subscription offering’s terms of service that this falls under “user error.”
We now naturally don’t know what it looked like when the thread starter did not cancel their subscription successfully.
It could be obvious user error, but it could also be something shitty like receiving a mail which implies that the cancellation has been received and only mentions in a footer “Please all us to confirm your cancellation”. Such things exist
