Explain to me how licenses/seats for the Asset Store

I already posted this on Tuesday in the Asset Store forum but apparently people only post in there if you have a popular new asset. I just have a simple question.

I’m going to be working on a project with a 2nd person for the 1st time and will need to buy multiple seats for a few assets.

Do I need to buy 2 seats on my account or do each of us need to buy 1 seat?

If I buy 2 seats does this mean the other person I’m working with will need to login with my account? Or do I somehow transfer that 2nd license to the other user.

I figured I’d ask on here before I went around buying a bunch of things.

If you have a asset that requires one license per seat, you need to buy it once on your account and your partner need it to buy it once on his account.(that my understanding and not a legal advice)

That’s my assumption as well but each person can buy multiple licenses from one account - the purpose of which eludes me

If you are both independent developers working together, you will each need to buy a license.

If you own a business (such as an LLC) and the other developer is an employee of your business, or the two of you have formed a legal entity (business) partnership, then you will need to buy all of the per seat licenses under your business account.

So, if you are a business, you only need to buy multiple licenses of the per-seat assets. But if you are not a business, then you’ll each need to buy licenses for all of the assets (not just the per-seat ones).

Is there somewhere where this is described? The other person is not likely to work with Unity past this project so it think treating them as a employee would be appropriate in this case but I want to review the specific requirements to make that happen.

You’ll have to form a legal business and they will need to be an employee of that business, in which case you’ll be responsible for the appropriate employment taxes as well. You’ll need to check with your local government agency as to what it takes. I formed my LLC in a couple of weeks and it was pretty easy (here in Nebraska), but I also have a friend that is a lawyer that helped me out. I had to file some paperwork, pay some fees, create articles or organization, and advertise a notice of organization in a local newspaper. In all it cost me about $600 I think.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly, I’m frankly surprised that this isn’t explicitly stated in the FAQs about it.

Well, it kind of is. I mean, it’s not really something that belongs necessarily in the FAQ. That’s what the EULA is there for.
