when i apply ‘unwrap uv’ in 3ds max, the uvw mapping disappers. is there any way to keep this?

can you please be more specific about the issue? When modifier is on top of object you select all the faces and open edit UV window. From there i usually use use automatic flat UV. It usually does the job well if the model is simple.
sorry, i should have posted that i have sorted this now. i just didnt select a different map channel.
